Even if you do not know a lot about the Spanish Civil War, you will enjoy this incredible movie about that time period in history. There is comedy, tragedy, pathos, suspense and wisdom in this story of a piece of the war as seen through the eyes of two traveling entertainers who happen to land up in the wrong place at the wrong time. The film crescendos to an ending of hope, believe it or not. It does not matter if you understand Spanish, the subtitles are excellent and the performances are superb. I have even used this film for an AP Spanish class of high school seniors and it left a lasting impression on them!

VHS : Danton
Although DANTON distills events that occurred over several months into a matter of days, this film comes very close to taking viewers back to Paris on the eve of "The Great Terror."

I have seen DANTON many times, and I am still impressed with its realism and impact. This piece is beautifully cast, although I believe Robespierre and Desmoulins were a bit slighter in build than they are portrayed.

In my own role of college teacher, I was recently asked by a colleague to recommend the best film on the Revolution. Without hesitation, I answered, "Danton."

Of course, there is some degree of excess and inaccuracy in the film--mind you, this comment comes from someone who has spent many years studying the Revolution--but its value as a historical drama of what ... Read More

Art that can claim greatness deals with complex issues in complex ways. If the answers or questions posed were simple they could be framed in a single sentence, or a ten second film, then the art would not be its own best explanation. This thought stuck with me as I watched Krzystof Kielowski's complex and fascinating, if flawed, The Decalogue, illuminating aspects of the Ten Commandments from the third, transitional phase of his career, which included this 1988-89 Polish television series, filmed in 1987 and 1988, as well as the two subsequent feature films derived from episodes five and six, A Short Film About Killing and A Short Film About Love. Kielowski's filmic career can be divided into four parts. The first was his career as a documentarian, the second was his early fictive films, and the fourth and final ... Read More

"Czlowiek Z Zelaza" ("Man of Iron") is the sequel to "Man of Marble." "Man of Marble" consisted of an unraveling story that unfolded by a series of flashbacks told by various characters, and this film follows a similar format. Although the unfolding of the story was probably not as complex, the film has important historical significance.

As "Man of Marble" recounted events of the 1950s to 1970s, "Man of Iron" covers the time of the 1970s to 1980s. Essentially, "Man of Iron" is the story of how the government attempts to suppress the steelworkers strike. Although the characters of the film are fictitious, it is based on historical events. This is an important film for understanding the Police State that existed in the early 1980s in Poland.

"Man of Iron" answers the questions left unanswered in ... Read More

Do not listen to the film buffs who call this "art" and a series of vignettes that defy any meaning, its worthless and boring. The whole film has no interest to offer, what it tends to portray is stuffy French poseurs who smoke and talk about nothing in particular, that isn't very entertaining. I was dragged to the ending finally and was exhausted by the absolute uselessness of this picture and of Godard himself who isn't a very capable film director.

VHS : The Tin Drum
This is one of those films that one watches with a sense of increasing admiration but perhaps in my case diminishing pleasure. It is surely one of the best-made German films of the post-war period. One can't fault the acting and directing; surely the music is as haunting as it is memorable. this time around I found the film less interesting and more repulsive than I had remembered it. Its overall meaning is also rather allusive. The boy has powers that are not explained, nor is their allegorical meaning to which many refer. The boy is an intolerable little monster, but what does it mean that nobody has the guts to take him on? Who does he represent? Much is made of his background, the story of his mother;'s birth, the seduction of his grandmother: where's all this going? The film lovingly concentrates on the grotesque. Lots of toilet ... VHS : Most Beautiful Polish Christmas Carols v.1
This video can fill your home with beautiful arrangements of Polish Christmas carols that you learned from childhood and still hold dear to your heart. They are sung by such professional ensembles as the Poznan Men and Boys Choir, a Choral group from Krakow, and the famous Polish National Folk Song and Dance Ensemble "Mazowsze". All of these professional ensembles are well known in the Polish communities in the US and both have performed here many times. The carols are sung in both beautiful indoor and outdoor settings which gives an authentic air. The folk costumes from Mazowsze are dazzling as usual.

The only setback to this video is that a couple of carols are repeated although sung by different ensembles. Nevertheless, it is still worth purchasing the video. I would strongly recommend this video for persons not of Polish descent ... Read More
