VHS : The Red Balloon
basic, basic plot: Boy meets balloon. Boy and balloon hang out around Paris, despite others' efforts to separate them.

I had put off seeing this because it sounded hilariously boring. (In fact, I believe that the old tv show "The Critic" had this movie as part of some kind of joke, insisting that it was the eponymous critic's favorite movie to exemplify his pomposity.) I wound up watching it the other day late at night because it was short and I wouldn't stay up...and was definitely wide awake afterwards. I won't go into too much detail about what happens in the film because it's so short, but I will say that I found it very enjoyable and I will watch it again sometime to get a better look at the effects used in giving the balloon personality, as well as the final scene. I'd say that the last ... Read More

VHS : Latcho Drom
Latcho Drom is mesmerizing, the people magical and the music unforgettable.

There is no dialogue, but this does nothing to detract from the film's integrity or entertainment value. Although Rom diaspora has resulted in the Roma living in just about every country on earth, Latcho Drom provides the viewer with a coup d'oeil of the Roma people in Africa, Egypt, Turkey, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, France and Spain.

The Romanian Roma (the two are mutually exclusive), instantly pulled me under their spell. Upon first impression, the Romanian "gypsies" might look like a ragtag band of amateurs. In short order, however, this misconception is swiftly dispelled as these musical maestros fill the air with their art - all deftly orchestrated and delivered.

I was 18 when I saw this movie for the first time, and it gave me quite a shock - for the first time, I realized a movie could be more than just entertainment, then it could inform, infuriate and chill you at the same time.
This movie depicts the events surrounding the death of the charismatic leader of a leftist Greek political faction. As the judge in charge investigates, he realizes that it isn't an accident, but murder, sanctioned by important people. These events are based on the real-life assassination of Gregorios Lambrakis in 1963.
The directing is taut, the actors excellent, and the tension mounts steadily. This is a movie you must see - and ponder seriously. How strong is democracy ? Can a faction in power manipulate events and push aside (or even kill) anyone who opposes it with impunity ?
I think it ... Read More

This excellent movie is beautifully photographed, deeply affecting, intricate but clear, and it illustrates the monstrous abuse a totalitarian government perpetrates upon its citizens and their heroic battles against it. I highly recommend it.

When I saw this film for a film class years ago, it was called "Romauld et Juliette" and it had subtitles. It was then released here under this title, which hardly gives the impression of a lovely, moving, surprising film that starts with implications of white-collar crime but ends up with a joyful meshing of relationships. At least the "American remake" never happened--and I hope it never does. This film is perfect as it is.

Deneuve is in a subdued role in this film. She's also in a supporting role so the film cover is a bit misleading. The story is not as strong as others that she's chosen.

Daniel Auteuil is great as the cop who is entangled in the life of a trouble-making young woman. Extremely sexy in this role, he plays the role of a strong yet conflicted law enforcer well.

The film is a bit weak in its flow. It's not the worst film but it's also not extremely good either.
