VHS : The Winter War
Today I when into my local book store and saw a DVD on top of some old books call "Talvisota". I bought for $4.99 cause it looked like a war movie (which I like). I looked it up on this website. Apparently, this is a very good film. Also, my version is (which is foreign) is a much longer film than the one listed on this website. The one on this website is 125 minutes (2 hours) were as my copy says on the back that it is 3 hours and 11 minutes long. So apparently there are 2 copies of this film available.

If you are at all like I am and find that many Western films are simply not doing it for you, might I suggest a Russian film subtitled in three different languages?????

It is a good thing (not Martha Stewart-like!) to have Amazon friends with which to watch, learn, observe and share. I watched this film "The Cuckoo" (KUKUSHKA) by famed director Alexander Rogozskin with one friend who said to me "You really need to see this film. I can't think of anything like it that I have ever seen!" WHY NOT! So we did, and he was right!

I speak only for myself when I say that this film has to be one of the most pleasantly odd (if that would be the best word to use) movies that I have ever seen. This film tells three very separate stories, in three different languages and cultural understandings, ... Read More

VHS : Ariel
"Ariel" is as funny and deadpan as the best movies from the great Aki Kaurismaki. The hero is a victim of unfortunate circumstances, starting with his being laid off from his job as a miner, and continuing during his quest for a better life, both in work and in love. In typical Kaurismaki fashion, he reacts with the same expression (very little) to catastrophic events as he does to minor occurences.

When our hero meets up with Matti Pellonpaa ("Leningrad Cowboys Go America," "La Vie de Boheme") about halfway through the film, they say nothing to each other, but a great partnership begins, taking us to the end of the movie. This movie has quite a bit of action, by Kaurismaki standards. And, as usual, there are no wasted words. Dialogue is at a minimum here.

With "Ariel," the masterful Kaurismaki ... Read More

VHS : The Match Factory Girl
Kati Outinen is a deadpan madonna that can take you anywhere. You like her - the poor match factory girl? Cuidado. You may be riding the anchor instead of the boat. A doormat that bites! I'm thinking Sandrine Bonnaire on Quaaludes - or Bette Davis as Helen Keller. After you see this film, for an antidote, watch Kati in "The Man Without a Past."

VHS : Harmagedon (Sub)
I enjoyed this film emensely. Its a great science fiction story from Kazumu Hirai's very long and fabled series of Genma Wars novels. The direction from Rintaro in this film is excelent and visionary. Katsuhiro Otomo's character designs also give this film a nice touch. Hamragedon is the americanized name though. Its real name is The Battle With Genma (or perhaps simply Genma Wars). This film was highly influential in Japan, especially for its realism, and it is considered a landmark among many otaku and those in the industry. The anime tv series Genma Wars is also based on the same novels (and manga by Shotaro Ishinomori), which I also liked dispite extremely low budgeted animation. If only that series had the animation and direction of this film. However, get the special edition DVD instead of this obsolete version with horrible ... Read More
