VHS : Temptation of a Monk
"Temptation of a Monk" is one title in my prized collections, along
with "Brazil", "Das Boot", "Fisher King", and "Wallace and Grommet"...

The movie takes us on a transformational journey with the protagonist General. Though he commands the fate of hundreds of thousands of people, and even the fate of nations, he was caught helplessly in a turmoil caused by royal sibling rivlary, where the prize of wrong alliance is death. After the coup, his subordinate saught the General's death to avenge the betrayed, now dead prince. His mother then denouced his failure to protect the dead prince, and thus tarnished the family reputation as loyal subjects. She expressed her denouncement through suicide, which the General witnessed. He soon became a fugitive general pursued by the newly ... Read More

VHS : Ashes of Time
(5 stars for "Ashes of Time", 1 star for this or any known DVD edition. What a shame.)

One of the best most awarded films and one of the most deep explorations of loneliness and sorrow, justly ranking among the best produced Honk Kong films of the 90's, this mysterious and sensual portrayal of sadness and melancholy is often mistaken for the typical swordsplay action film, dissapointing and even boring the fans of the genre. But make no mistake: This is an Art film in capital letters, a profound and oblique vision within the human soul, based on a non-linear development, flashbacks and voiceovers, with total character emphasys, expressionist camera and enveloping soundtrack, about the pain and intense regrets of the past and memories. The Wuxia film people expects, happens to be only ... Read More

If you are a fan of sword and sorcery/samurai films -- or better yet, if you've never experienced the genre -- this is the one for you. All of the baby Cart films are mind blowing, but this installment has it all. I won't go into any details -- just sit back, and watch the blood hoses fly!

VHS : Raise the Red Lantern
Unbelievably bad DVD rendition of this film. The first thing to greet you are the constant film damage blips and scratches which continue throughout the film. They couldn't find an undamaged celluloid original to copy to DVD? One of the most acclaimed Chinese films of its time and its presented this way? Shame! And then there's the translation. What a pathetic translation. It's all over the place with misspellings, typos, disjointed sentences, missing words, and ridiculous transliterations. You have to grapple with this translation to comprehend the meanings. They couldn't find an actual English speaker with a minimum sixth grade education to double-check the English? Beyond comprehension.

I give it one star to ward you off from this edition. I should expect the more recent editions are the production ... Read More

VHS : Death Mask of Ninja
I've reviewed about every fu movie I've seen, and have seen many many many that are not on there so I went on the vhs side to see if I recognize anything and this death mask movie caught my eye. The box that is being shown for this movie is obviously a drawing from another movie. This movie stars ti lung and a very young derek yee. But this has to be my favorite performance ever from the great jason pai pao. Jason is the evil 9th prince and tried to kill the father of these 2 kids. So one of the kids goes to learn at shaolin. The other goes to live with the prime minister. They both learn kungfu of course. And the 9th prince is looking for them, why who ask, because they could come back for him one day, geez, do you ever watch kungfu? Now you kinda get the feel that the movie is going to be a slapstick comedy, ... Read More

VHS : Beijing Bicycle
I saw bits and parts of this film last night on TV and decided to check it out again on dvd. It is quite surprising that a movie about a boy losing his bicycle can be compelling. It is a harrowing account of innocence lost and honestly, it is a bit brutal. It is a tale of a young man and his lost bike.

Plot synopsis partially derived from back cover:
Set in modern-day Beijing, this powerful and evocative drama depicts, in brilliant detail, the daily struggle that the millions of citizens of Beijing face day in and day out. When a young man, Guei, arrives in Beijing from a rural village he finds a job as a delivery boy. Discovering that must make 60 deliveries before he can pay for the loaned silver mountain bike which he needs for his work, he sets about to become the most efficient and diligent worker in his ... VHS : The Emperor and the Assassin
Chen Kaige's The Emperor and the Assassin was one of the more expected Chinese flops of the 90s, coming so soon after the previous telling of the same tale, The Emperor's Shadow had failed to set the box-office alight and long before the stylised Hero would become a breakout international success. Indeed, the running joke at the time was that Chen Kaige thought The Emperor's Shadow only flopped because he didn't direct it.

China seems to have the same attitude to its First Emperor (Li Xuejian) as France does to Napoleon, alternating between admiration for the best of his achievements and condemnation for the methods he used to pursue them, and the film does at least embrace these contradictions in its portrait of an often childish but visionary Emperor wanting to end 550 years of hell and unite all of China under one benevolent ...
