1.Latcho Drom starring: La Caita

VHS : Latcho Drom
Latcho Drom is mesmerizing, the people magical and the music unforgettable.

There is no dialogue, but this does nothing to detract from the film's integrity or entertainment value. Although Rom diaspora has resulted in the Roma living in just about every country on earth, Latcho Drom provides the viewer with a coup d'oeil of the Roma people in Africa, Egypt, Turkey, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, France and Spain.

The Romanian Roma (the two are mutually exclusive), instantly pulled me under their spell. Upon first impression, the Romanian "gypsies" might look like a ragtag band of amateurs. In short order, however, this misconception is swiftly dispelled as these musical maestros fill the air with their art - all deftly orchestrated and delivered.

This film, nominated in 1999 as Best Foreign film, is a very sweet film about three young people coming of age in Lebanon during civil war. It does a great job at picking up some of the idiosyncrasies of the Lebanese people, as well as the French under whom they were once ruled. Its very entertaining, has great music, and does an extraordinary job of conveying the nuances of the society and its societal partitions. It illustrates religious conflicts while remaining a gentle and humane film. Even people who don't normally like foreign films should watch this movie because it shows how much more alike we all are than how we are different.

VHS : Merchant of Four Seasons
Fassbinder made three of his best films in the early 1970s: The Merchant of the Four Seasons (1971) (Händler der vier Jahreszeiten), The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant (1972) (Die Bitteren Tränen der Petra von Kant), and Ali - Fear Eats the Soul (1974) (Angst essen Seele auf), for which he won the International Critics Prize at Cannes in 1974. In his insightful review of Fassbinder's films, "Straight from the Heart," Tony Pipolo notes that during this time, Fassbinder was discovering that however small his characters may be, and however insignificant their emotions may seem, they could be big on the movie screen. In the pivotal Merchant of the Four Seasons, Fassbinder paints a poignant portrait of a fruit merchant (Hans Hirschmüller) in 1950s Germany. There is profound sadness in this film. ... Read More

This one is worth a rent or possibly a buy for your DVD collection. Gad is one funny guy and even with my halting knowledge of French I could follow most of the gags. Overall, a pretty funny movie but not quite as good as Chouchou.

I really liked this movie. Many sequences of the wedding are as exciting and joyous as some in "Monsoon Wedding". I think the director really did a superb job at describing so many interesting and different characters. Nothing, in this part of the world, is simple, and nothing is presented, here, as simple.
Truly beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and truly there is nothing like objective truth. I really do not understand how can anyone judge this movie as one sided. How can this movie be judged anti-Palestinian? Simply because there are some negative Palestinian characters that take part of the wedding? Maybe a balanced movie would depict Palestinians as perfect human being, without blames or faults? How can a movie be anti-Palestinian when the Israelis FORCE their way into the wedding, as a condition ... Read More

I highly recommend it for family viewing with boys who are curious or experiencing their own sexual awakening. It was fascinating to learn that teenage boys growing up in Islamic and Judeo-Christian society experience the same curiosity about their sexual awakening and the pranks they go through.
One could see that there are the same taboos between the two cultures when it comes to sex education for children, i.e. parents or close adult kin or friends do not discuss their teenagers interest openly.
I was rather surprised that this film survive the puritanical censors of the U.S. There was a scene of a woman stroking a boy's penis in the bath house. And they showed a circumcision ceremony with a scene of a child's foreskin being pulled out and about to be cut off.
This film also gives the viewer an insight ... Read More

VHS : Ali: Fear Eats the Soul (Sub)
Well, for me, this is one of those deserted island movies...you know: what books or movies would you have should you find yourself all alone on an island? Well, in the unlikely event that I had electricity and a player, "Ali: Fear Eats the Soul" would be one of those films. For me, this is Fassbinder's best film, this tale of two lost souls finding each other and struggling to persevere despite the odds. As has been mentioned, it is a nod to Douglas Sirk and All That Heaven Allows. A widow, lonely as her grown children move on with their lives, meets a much younger man. They take a liking to each other much to the horror of said children and tongue-wagging neighbors.

Fassbinder differentiates his film from the Sirk model by two key points: ethnicity and realism. Ali is an Arab and thus an outsider in a post ... Read More

This trademark role, along with "Grand Illusion", contributes to French actor Gabin's legacy what "The Maltese Falcon" and "Casablanca" did for Bogart. Duvivier's dark film is one our most atmospheric mysteries, exuding an almost paranoic tension. Gabin (like younger countryman Gerard Depardieu), is not classically handsome, but possessed of a rugged allure that women find unable to resist. At the same time, Balin is pretty irresistible herself, definitely a woman worth taking chances for. See Gabin's charisma at its height in the incomparable "Pepe".

One of the best movies ever produced about a patriarchal society (not only regional, but universal). Exceptional acting, scenario, music, direction. And what a beautiful and courageous movie it is! And what a limited release! Many thanks to LINK TV public television of San Francisco for showing it, of course, no release in "popular" theatres.
The few "chosen" men of the traditional aristocracy have the power,
there is no contest and everything else is in the closet (sexual abuse, illegal abortion leading to death, women and children sold into slavery because of poverty, and the complete silence of the "traditional family"). There is no way out for anybody caught in this cycle but revolution. Amazing Tunisian movie! What a lesson for the 21st century! Today, September 3, 2008, I am appalled to see how a so called "free" election ... Read More
