As the Peruvian's review indicates, there are certainly Latin Americans who don't want to face part of their political reality, just as there are US citizens who like to deny or rationalize the violence of the United States of North America. The "Indian Wars" of the US empire continue as this film on the oppression of Guatemalan Mayan Indians reveals. While President Clinton did offer a near-apology for our decades of funding and organizing Guatemala's dirty war that killed 200,000 people, our corporatocracy continues to exploit the region and to wage economic warfare via NAFTA, CAFTA and the World Bank.
"Men With Guns" beautifully shows all who care the sort of brutal madness that has been taking place in Central America. I've shared this film with Guatemalan immigrants I know, and ... Read More

I would advise any cinefile with a human heart and an appreciation of true art to disregard all reviews (including this one), watch the movie, and judge for himself; lest he miss a unique and uniquely profound experience.

The film is a timeless thing of beauty, strikingly original, grounded in true human-ness, at times moving, at times bitter-sweet, but always real; and it leaves no trace of current cockamamie ideologies about women or other political korrectness: it is about real life, or sober fantasy.

Directed by a woman, most definitely not a "chick flick". The furthest thing from a "romance novel", though many superficial viewers seem unable to tell the (huge) difference. I would also say that it is sex-neutral. It says as much to men as to women. (I am one of the ... Read More

Spanish surrealist director Luis Bunuel's grim "Los Olvidados" is a stark, realistic depiction of the lives of a gang of impoverished street kids in the squalid slums of Mexico City. Doomed to their existence by indigence, lack of education and parental guidance these unfortunate street urchins resort to crime and violence to sustain themselves.

Bunuel's dark commentary on society revolves around two boys, one basically good, Pedro played by Alfonso Mejia, and one bad, Jaibo played by Roberto Cobo. Jaibo has just escaped from a reformatory and takes up his place as the leader of the gang. He leads them in robbing and persecuting weak and defenseless people in the neighborhood. Pedro, born out of wedlock and abhored by his mother tries everything to win her affection but to no avail. ... Read More

Odd satire on voyeurism (?) that has film student Virginia (Maria Rojo) wrapping up her film studies class with a video project that will require another person. She gets former boyfriend Marcelo (Jose Alonso) to come over for a drink and to talk. She plans on using him as an "experiment" in the project. She tries to seduce him but he discovers the camera, gets angry and leaves but returns later and agrees to help her. They get naked and have sex for the video project. "Homework" takes place on one set and from the angle of Virginia's camera. It's a two-person character study that turns out in the end not to be what it appears at all. The sex is lengthy and explicit and designed to turn you on (it takes place in a hammock) setting up the viewer for the twist at the end. The first part of the film is a tease ... Read More

The criticism of intent is a killer on bad films that have no real depth and do not last a few years beyond their intent's purpose. Such was re-emphasized to me watching Spanish filmmaker Luis Buñuel's vastly overrated black and white 1961 `shock classic' Viridiana. Of course, all the alleged shock value had to do with Buñuel's puerile attempts to poke fun at and scandalize both the Roman Catholic Church and the regime of Fascist dictator Francisco Franco, and nearly five decades later it looks more like a college prank video than any serious cinema. Furthermore, it is not in the least bit subversive, as many poor critics claim, because its criticism of the Church, especially- and even then, was so manifest as to make one wonder if those who claimed it had subversive qualities even knew what the term meant. ...
