VHS : Xica
This is one of those great movies that is extremely under-rated. Xica is an African slave in Brazil who overcomes her bonds of slavery and masters her master using her feminine wiles. This is definitely a must-see movie!

2.Pixote starring: Fernando Ramos da Silva, Jorge Julião, Gilberto Moura, Edilson Lino, Zenildo Oliveira Santos

VHS : Pixote
Ten-year-old Pixote (Portuguese slang word for, "PeeWee")is one of the millions of homeless children in Brazil. He is arrested in a typical police round-up and placed in their vesion of the United States Junenvile detention centers. although them film is about the kids down in Brazil, some 20 years ago.... You would be surprised to know,... that the US system is not much better, today, than what is portrayed in this movie! The kids in the US judical and foster care systems are treated pretty much the same way as these kids are treated 20 years ago in a third world country! Some people may look at this film and say, " Oh those poor kids down there in Brazil....", but what they don't know is that nothing has changed down there and it is much the same with the kids here... in America!!!

3.City of God (Sub) starring: Alexandre Rodrigues, Matheus Nachtergaele, Leandro Firmino, Phellipe Haagensen, Douglas Silva

VHS : City of God (Sub)
It has a disturbing and thought-propvoking plot. It shows what life has in store for many kids in one of Rio de Janeiro's ghettos, City of God. They learn to kill, rob, and sell drugs to get rich. Most of them will end up being killed.

The acting look real. The surprising thing is most of them are non-professional actors.

The film is interesting from the beginning till the end. If you like movie dealing with social issues. This is definitely for you. It's the best movie from Brazil so far.

VHS : Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands
I loved this movie when I saw it on the big screen years ago. It may never be put in DVD format. It was a wonerful film but not a box office hit. It's a lot of fun to watch. So if you still have a VHS player go for it.

5.Black Orpheus starring: Maria Alice, Elizeth Cardoso, Aurino Cassiano, Alexandro Constantino, Arlete Costa

VHS : Black Orpheus
This movie has long been among my favorites. Had it been in English it would get 5 stars. It is this reading that takes away from the beauty of the film. Gritty and real. For me, knowing the story, I really don't have to read, and I can focus on the unusual Beauty. There are some flaws but what it clearly does is gives you a sense of place. You ARE in Rio during carnival....and if you can watch this movie without once getting on your feet...you just don't get it. Enjoy!!

6.Boca starring: Rae Dawn Chong, Martin Kemp, Tarcísio Meira, Martin Sheen, Carlos Eduardo Dolabella
directed by: Walter Avancini, Zalman King

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

VHS : Boca
I agree with one reviewer here who says that the characters of Boca himself, the brutal gangster, and his feral Brazilian mistress - they are the jewels in this film. One of the most memorably erotic movies I have ever seen. I wish, like another reviewer, that it would come out as a DVD. I'd snap it up in a second.

7.Lisbon Story starring: Rüdiger Vogler, Patrick Bauchau, Vasco Sequeira, Canto e Castro, Viriato Jose da Silva

VHS : Lisbon Story
I saw this movie first and only realized later that Wim Wenders also directed Wings of Desire, a film which I also enjoyed very much.

This is beautiful, quiet sort of a movie with a minimalist quality to it as it seems to have been filmed in Lisbon in the summer where it is so hot that nobody seems to be around. In that light, there is an oddly beautiful and romantic quality to vibes of lonliness presented in the film.

Without giving away too much, the film is about a man in Germany who is a sound maker, so to speak, for movies. He receives a post card (from Lisbon), in a pile of mail (that has been piling up for who knows how long). He discovers that his movie director buddy has desperately asked for his assistance in a project.

The introduction takes our ... Read More

VHS : Behind the Sun
Throughout the world there are a million stories happening every second. Try to wrap your mind around that for a moment. As I sit here and type, or as you sit there and read this review, there are people experiencing their lives through sadness, adventure, humor, or experimentation. There are those who are finally breaking free from the monotony of life by exploring outside of the box to see where an unfocused, un-traveled path may lead them. Alas, not all of these stories can make it to the screen, not all of the stories can be told, and not all of these stories deserve to - but thankfully acclaimed director Walter Salles picked up his camera, brought together a group of minimalist characters, and told one story that wasn't filled with CGI, wasn't headlined with big name box-office sensations, and wasn't ... VHS : A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings (Señor muy viejo con unas alas enormes) ENGLISH SUBTITLES
I was looking for a video of this short story by Marquez because my high school class was reading it in school. I borrowed the tape from a local library before I bought it to see if we wanted a copy in our library.
I thought the movie was very true (overall to the author), and I enjoyed how closely the director kept to the story, but then the second half changed dramatically from the first half, so much that I became very thankful that I previewed the tape before I showed it to my class.

There was quite a bit of profanity in the second half, AND there were several sexual scenes that could not be shown in the classroom. These scenes were not in the short story, so I guess they were added to give some spice to the video, but I thought it was very unnecesary, and of course, now my students can't enjoy ... Read More
