When C.S.Lewis, author of such books as "The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe" was only a small boy of 9, his mother died and he learned that his only way through the pain and loneliness was to encase himself in an impenetrable shell, so that pain could not touch him. He leads an ordered, safe life as an Oxford Don, singing in the cathedral choir and lecturing to audiences of adoring women readers. When he meets American writer, Joy Gresham, her brash, New York, Jewish forthrightness almost batters him but luckily he summons enough courage to begin a friendship. He agrees to marry her so as to allow her and her son to remain in England and gradually she softens his defences and becomes part of his life as a platonic friend. When they discover that Joy is dying from incurable cancer, Lewis realises ... Read More

I was under the impression that "Wings of Desire" was a unique love story and I guess it is. However that aspect of the film was almost a distraction compared to the real nature of the movie. For me, "Wings of Desire" is a brilliant cinematic concept of angels in the world around us. If that sounds overly religious or unappealling, hold on. The way director Wim Wenders brings his vision to life is the essential beauty of this movie. We almost get the impression that these angels punch in and punch out. They are sincere and they do what they can to help whenever they see the appropriate opportunity. However, they are angels; not God. We see efforts that succeed and efforts that fail and we realize that these angels can influence but not prevent. We see, through their eyes, the beautiful and the banal. ... Read More

What a work of art! This is one of the best movies of all time. When the spinster missionary woman (Hepburn) must TOLERATE Mr. Arnaut (Bogart)
in their life-threatening trip down the river in a beat-up old boat, The African Queen, the fun begins. She can drum up no respect for this man--until she realizes that he is an intelligent person who may be able to save their lives by his cool wit. He good naturedly sloughs off her constant criticism, while she endures his slovenly ways and colorful language. At some point they start developing a strong like for each other. When Bogie finally shaves, well you know romantic sparks are about to fly. Movies or stories do not come any better than this.

"October 1918" is the date for this story. German soldiers are planting explosives to destroy the advancing British soldiers when they occupy a French city. The townspeople hurriedly evacuate the town. The British are warned, they will not march into town. Instead Private Plumpick [some pun?] will be sent in to scout the town and defuse the bombs - by himself! [Believable?] Discovered by the Germans, he flees into a building for refuge and safety; it is the local insane asylum. The result of the German withdrawal is the inmates can wander freely into the deserted town and select new clothes from the abandoned homes. [This slow-paced action doesn't seem too funny to me.] Comedy is in part cultural, and attitudes change. Perhaps the humor is in suggesting the clothes make the man or woman? Or what looks like normal people ... Read More

I think GEORGE LAZENBY is the BEST BOND EVER. Too bad that Albert R. Brocolli and Harry Saltzman decided to chuck this Australian car salesman, after his one-time appearance as James Bond. Diana Rigg IS the prettiest Bond Girl. Louis Armstrong sings: 'We have all the time in the world'. Telly Savalas makes a terrific Ernest Stavro Blofeld. There is a tremondous Ice-Skating sequence, that has yet to be repeated. Many viewvers even from India, would not have noticed the 'saree-clad', Miss India, among the array of 'Bond-girls'. Also this movie, unlike all the other movies, in the ENTIRE lot, is closest to Bond - Creator, Ian Fleming's Book.

This tragic coming-of-age tale (filmed in French) is an all-time classic that took forever to make it to DVD because of a longstanding family squabble. Unlike the seemingly ancient VHS version (only 20 years old, but film decomp makes it look like WWII newsreel footage), the digital transfer solves sound and visual problems -- especially the subtitles, which were annoying oversized in the original. As for the plot -- it's long, like the movie, but in a nutshell: Jewish boy goes to German school pretending to be non-Jew during WWII in order to save his life. He forms a friendship with a non-Jewish boy at the school, and...that's all I'll say, as giving anymore away will rob you of a great movie viewing experience. If you can find it solo, buy it. If not, there's a boxed four pack of Louis Malle films that includes this one. Pricey, but the ... Read More

VHS : Fawlty Towers - The Complete Collection
Fawlty Towers is one of those British sitcoms that although they haven't a high number of episodes, the quality alone is something to make it a timeless classic. I think the high number of people who wil gladly vouch for how good this sitcom is only expresses the true quality of the comedy and the cast involved. The characters are well defined and the setting is utilised to its full potential. Only 13 episodes were made but managed to gain such a cult following, those 13 episodes were just enough to keep the likes of Basil Fawlty a household name for over 30 years. Only the likes of Del Boy and Rodney have gained such a heightened level of comedic status.

The story is simple, Fawlty Towers is a hotel owned and managed by Basil Fawlty (John Cleese) and his wife sybil (Prunella Scales). Basil is supported by his hotel cleaner and waitress ... Read More
