VHS : Conagher
More than just a romantic western (though it is that), this story gives us a picture of manliness we don't often see: the honor, generosity, courtesy, courage, independence and toughness which duty demands of a man, and how those around him are better off when he rises to meet that standard.

The young cowhand (Johnny?) in the story is confronted with the hard decision between two opposing paths. Nor is Conn Conagher any wishy-washy, "tolerant" compromiser when it comes to what is right for men to do.

For most boys coming of age today, such times and such men are long gone, it seems. Yet those who aspire to be counted as men face that same hard decision. They deserve to be presented with the choices in such clear terms.

Tom Selleck and Simon Wincer, who first teamed up in 1990 for the Australian-set western "Quigley Down Under," team up once again for the made-for-television western "Crossfire Trail," based on a Louis L'Amour novel. In this film, Selleck plays Rafe Covington, a man who promised a dying friend that he'd look after his wife and the family ranch in Wyoming, only to be troubled by the wife's refusal to believe his words, and a man who has an eye on both the woman and the ranch.
The film is a terrific western adventure, with fantastic performances by the likes of Selleck, Virginia Madsen, Wilford Brimley, David O'hara, Brad Johnson and Mark Harmon. Great action set pieces, beautiful scenery and a terrific score by Eric Colvin combine to make a powerhouse western, the likes of which haven't ... Read More

Thirty years after his death, John Wayne remains an enigma. Many books have been written about him, none of which I've read, and so I know little of his personal life other than he has been both praised for embodying traditional American ideals and reviled for his archconservative bigotry.

Yet he remains today perhaps this country's biggest movie star. Today's actors - Tom Hanks, Russell Crowe, Liam Neeson, Jack Nicholson - are more accomplished actors with greater range; while from Wayne's era, Clark Gable was more handsome, James Cagney more talented, Jimmy Stewart and Henry Fonda more eclectic. But for sheer screen charisma, I can't think of another actor from any era who brings more to the screen. Whenever Wayne is onscreen the viewer is simply compelled to watch him. Often described ... Cheyenne Warrior: The Original Screenplay with Author Commentary
Shadow Watcher
Nobody Drowns in Mineral Lake

Nominated for three Academy Awards, BROKEN ARROW (1950) is one of the great, landmark westerns. It's the first significant film that treated Indians as human beings and not just blood-thirsty savages, and led the way to such later films as CHEYENNE AUTUMN, LITTLE BIG MAN, A MAN CALLED HORSE and a film that I wrote, CHEYENNE WARRIOR.

Adapted by Michael Blankfort from Elliott Arnold's book, BLOOD BROTHER, and directed by Delmer Daves, the film tells the essentially true story of Tom Jeffords (James Stewart) and his friendship with Apache chief Cochise (Jeff Chandler, in an Oscar-nominated role).

The year is 1870, and former Union soldier Tom Jeffords, ... Read More

Outstanding sequel to the original movie "The Man From Snowy River" except for the fact that there is one crucial scene that Disney had cut from the theatrical release of this move and therefore isn't on this Fullscreen Disney DVD.

You can find the restored Widescreen Director's Cut of this movie on a Region 4 DVD (you'll need a multi-regional DVD player) on eBay or at www.fishpond.co.nz

Just do a search for "The Man From Snowy River 2" or "The Man From Snowy River II"

The scene that is missing from this Region 1 Fullscreen Disney DVD but is on the Region 4 DVD restored Director's Cut is the wedding of Jim Craig & Jessica Harrison which takes place just barely before the end of the movie.

How can a movie at the end of the "golden era" with three major stars prove to be a dud. Welcome to The Spoilers. The script is weak, containing some real howlers. Marlene is wooden; her face seems to be painted on. (Would that she had danced and tried to sing.) Wayne and Scott smirk through every scene. Even the lengthy fight scene is poorly done; it's fun to watch the double for Scott appear and reappear in the long shots. Oh yes, and the story was supposed to take place in Nome. See if you can be persuaded that anyone left the Universal set. In short, this is a long, long way from Destry Rides Again.

Gunslinger Quirt Evans always had a rough life. His parents were killed by Indians, and he was raised by cowboys. He is accustomed to a life of rootlessness, violence, liquor, loose women, and gambling. The sheriff follows this badman around, expecting to nail him on a new misdeed.

All this seems to change, in this romantic old western, when Penelope, a young woman of the Quaker family that is nursing the bullet-wounded Evans back to health, falls in love with him. He gradually warms up to her. But she wonders--does love come all at once, or gradually? More important, are the feelings mutual?

The Quaker family prays that a greedy neighbor will let them have enough water for their flocks. Evans goes to the neighbor, and uses "friendly persuasion" to get him to release the water. It is even better ... Read More
