Sometimes a man has to stand up in the face of almost certain death, because to do otherwise is more unbearable. That's one of the lessons in this outstanding Western. Duvall and Costner are 2 of my favorites and they don't disappoint. It's good to see Costner play a man that's not embarrassed about being right and doesn't take the whole movie to convince he ought to defend the weak.

VHS : Little Big Man
Dustin Hoffman is great in this classic Western. It's one of the best Westerns out there. Hoffman plays a cavalry man who ends up living among the Native Americans. It's a bitter story of how poorly and unjustly were these people treated. Unfortunately, they're not faring much better today and the government does not treat them better either. There are some truths in this movie that we're still not willing to face and come to grips with today. This should be a required material for school kids and grown ups alike. We'd be much more grateful for what we have instead of complaining for what we can't buy if we thought about these things more.

VHS : The Alamo [Restored Original Director's Cut]
I love this film. It's entertaining as it can be but historically it is way off the mark. The lyrics of one of song goes as follows: "...let the legend grow and grow....'bout those thirteen days of glory at the siege of Alamo..." I think this demonstrates Wayne's philosophy..."let the LEGEND grow and grow..." He had no problem with bending the facts a little to emphasize the glory that was Alamo.

I'm in total disagreement with this philosophy. I think that the actual story of Alamo is so compelling that it shouldn't be fictionalized. So what if a few men, including possibly Davie Crockett, tried to surrender at the end? Outnumbered, out of ammunition and with a bayonet at your throat, ANYONE would have surrendered. It doesn't diminish the heroism by one iota.

VHS : Wyatt Earp
Wyatt Earp came out around the same time as Tomb Stone. It seemed that Tomb Stone over shadowed Wyatt Earp for some reason but I much preferred Wyatt Earp. Dennis Quad is a much better Doc Holiday than Val Kilmer. In fact, as much as I like Kilmer him being Doc Holiday was one of the things that kept Tomb Stone from appealing to me. On the other hand, Quad's Doc Holiday is one of Wyatt Earp's strong points. Kostner is excellent in this role. He is able to show Wyatt's personality changes throughout the movie as events effect his life. This is a long movie but it has a good pace that makes the three plus hours go by quickly. Not as well as Pearl Harbor did but not bad. Even though the movie is long, and they cover a lot of territory, I couldn't help feeling that there were some holes left unfilled here and ... Read More

7.The Plainsman starring: Gary Cooper, Jean Arthur, James Ellison, Charles Bickford, Helen Burgess

VHS : The Plainsman
This film is NOT a DeMille great - It becomes quite tedious in fact, after the first 40 min's. - due in no small part to Jean Arthur's atrocious miscasting and annoyingly whiney voice (what on earth was her appeal?). James Ellison (of the very great & crazy THE GANG'S ALL HERE) is totally absurd as Buffalo Bill. And poor Cooper seems ill at ease with the silly script.
One can usually count on DeMille to "deliver the goods", here he delivers the not so goods. And there is'nt even a "bath scene"!

This is a fantastic film, a brilliant example of a western or a war film, as well as being a very entertaining movie. The action is brutal and the directing makes this an amazing spectacle.

This is one of the best films I've ever seen.

A great genre film is not necessarily a great piece of cinema, for the dictates of genre often run counter to the dictates of art; namely that genre demands familiar elements (aka clichés). As good an example of this dictum that can be found is director Howard Hawks' 1948 (although filmed in 1946) black and white western Red River. There is great debate amongst western aficionados as to who was the greater director of westerns, John Ford or Howard Hawks? Well, if one compares the two westerns most consider the two directors' apexes in the genre, Ford's The Searchers and this film, it's no contest. Red River and Hawks win in a walk. That's because Hawks was basically concerned with narrative and characters while Ford obsessed over myth making and caricatures. Even Ford tacitly admitted Hawks was the superior craftsman, for when he first ... Read More
