VHS : Lonely Are the Brave
'Lonely are the Brave' was the film that Kirk Douglas, himself, regards as his favorite. No, it's not a big Hollywood flash like 'Spartacus' but it is the subtle and tragic rendention of a time and life style already gone. It's a tale of the passing of the old West and the disappearance of men--independent men--who couldn't or wouldn't change.

Douglas--Jack Burns--in the film is a man intolerant of rules, fences and civilization. He's a cowboy with an ideology. His sense of honor is antequated, perhaps, but all the more powerful because of it. In the interest of freedom he makes a series of preventable and deliberate mistakes. He breaks into jail to save an old friend, only to find that his friend doesn't want saving. Burns then breaks out of jail to be pursued across the ... Read More

VHS : Jubilee Trail
I just love Gwen Brister's 1950 book "Jubilee Trail," a vivid piece of historical fiction which travels from the rarified upper class world of Victorian New York City to the wild frontier of Mexican-ruled pre-statehood California. It is a great love/adventure story with two amazingly strong female protagonists, Garnet, the sheltered wife; and fallen woman Florinda; who travel together with the Santa Fe traders via wagon train along the Jubilee Trail from Missouri to California. I had no idea it was ever a movie so imagine my excitement when I saw it was available for home viewing.

Boy, what a disappointing adaptation. They omitted or edited out the courtship and marriage between Garnet and her physically strong but weak-willed hubby, handsome Oliver, so you have no sense of what ... Read More

As the story opens, lost-soul Roslyn (Marilyn Monroe) has just arrived in Reno to get a quickie divorce. She meets Guido (Eli Wallach), a sensitive mechanic and his pal Gay (Clark Gable), an aging cowboy. Both men fall in love with her and she ends up living with Gay in Guido's house. The men take Roslyn out the desert to go "mustangin'," but she's horrified when she learns the purpose of their trip.

This story is about four aimless and rather pathetic people who have nothing to do and no place to do it in. They're just drifting through life and for a short time, they drift together. Gable is outstanding as the rugged old cowpoke who still wants a woman's touch. He takes manly command of every scene and is charisma personified. Wallach's role is less flashy but still powerful ... VHS : The Last Ride
This is one of Rourkes lesser known movies that went straight to video, but dont let that fool you, as this is another great leading performance by Rourke. Micky does his job as an actor breathing life into his charater, and bringing the movie alive in a way that lesser actors would fail. The actress who plays his love interest does a fine job as well. Where the movie falls short is in the paint-by-numbers Hollywood type story line, and a terrible performance by an actor who plays the crazy redneck brother of Rourkes love interest, who plays the stupid, inbred, trailer park, white trash, bad guy the same way we've seen this type of character played a thousand different times in other movies... only worse. Thankfully, he is only in a few scenes. All in all, this is a well-acted, solid good little film. ... Read More

VHS : McCabe & Mrs. Miller
I loved this film when I saw it when it first came out. The combination of Beatty and Christie, who were an item at the time, assured its success with a lot of people. I wondered how I'd react to it now, so many years later. I was happy that, although it didn't have the huge emotional impact that it did on my first viewing, I still enjoyed every moment and was again genuinely moved by it.

The story is relatively simple. The enjoyment, I think, for me, is largely visual. The cinematography is gorgeous; there's something magical about shooting in the snow. (Remember that other spectacular Julie Christie film, Dr. Zhivago.) The two stars, of course, are in their prime and both beautiful to watch. They both inhabit their roles perfectly. The secondary characters are well defined and well ... Read More

Star Flynn and director Walsh worked together on two previous movies namely Gentleman Jim and They Died With Their Boots On.This was to be their final collaboration and it lacks the mythologising power of its predecessors but it still remains a solid Western of its era.
Flynn is cast in a relatively unsympathetic role for once .He plays Mike McComb who starts the movie as an officer in the Civil War who burns $ 1 million in payroll rather than see it fall into Confederate hands an action resulting in him being cashiered .He moves West with gambling equipment purloined from crooked gamblers and opens a saloon in Silver River where his rise to power and wealth is meteoric .He comes to own mines ,a bank and a grandiose mansion on the outskirts of town riding roughshod over opposition and with only raddled ...
