VHS : Skin Game
In the mid-70's James Garner & Louis Gossett teamed up in two memorable episodes of "The Rockford Files". Before that, however, they starred in "The Skin Game" with Susan Clark (best known as the mother on the t.v. show "Webster"). The Skin game is a smart comedy which also functions as an effective critique of the institution of slavery. All three stars are appealing and Garner does what he did best in "Maverick" and Rockford -- the con game. The con here is simple but enjoyable. The movie includes good performances by several familiar character actors of the era and features Ed Asner as the slave-trading bad guy. Due to "political correctness" I don't know if this movie could get made today, which is a shame. Highly recommended!

VHS : The Rounders
This amiable modern Western benefits enormously from the casting of the great genre veterans Henry Fonda and Glenn Ford as two veteran cowboys ,forever on the verge of abandoning their nomadic lifestyle and settling down ,but never quite making it.The movie revolves around their attempts to tame an especially recalitrant bronco named Ol Fooler-who it is suggested is a little like the two men in being stubborn ,hard to tame and determined to go his own way but likeable and who eventually will be coerced back into the mainstream

There is not a tightly constructed plot as such ,more a series of incidents heavy on the humour which -be aware ,is often slightly risque (there is a shot of bare bottoms for example which may bother the more prudish ).

Ford and Fonda are wonderful ... Read More

Great movie! Cute story. Maureen O'Hara and John Wayne have a magnetic chemistry which makes this movie work. Chill Wills is always fabulous in his supporting role. Comedy, romance, love, stubborn pride, etc.

True Grit (Special Collector's Edition)This is the movie John Wayne won an Oscar for his performance and well deserved it truely is! Excellent script, excellent directing and most of all, excellent acting. The movie was perfectly cast and all the actors delivered their best. The most beautiful locations added to the movie presentation. They have a featurette on this dvd about the location of the movie---and it is a real town. All I can say is the entire movie is so impressive and I would recommend this dvd as a must have for any film library.

VHS : The Cheyenne Social Club
The "Cheyenne Social Club" features two legendary actors who define Hollywood's portrayal of the American West. Texas cowboy O'Hanlon (Stewart) receives a letter from a lawyer in Cheyenne notifying him that his brother D.J. has passed away and that he has become the heir to his late brother's estate. He and his saddle-pal Harley Sullivan (Fonda) leave the Texas range and begin the 1000 mile ride to Wyoming.

The trip to Cheyenne provides the backdrop for a 1000 mile conversation by Sullivan, much to the bemused annoyance of the stoic O'Hanlon. Upon their arrival, O'Hanlon finds he has become "a man of property", and is now the proud owner of the legendary "Cheyenne Social Club." He is soon shocked to find his "property" is a notorious frontier bordello known and revered throughout the west. It ... Read More

VHS : 3 Stooges: Outlaws Is Coming
THE OUTLAWS IS COMING (1965) is yet another great Three Stooges feature film. It's also their last feature. This one has some great comedy in it. I noticed some similarity for THE THREE STOOGES MEET HERCULES (1962), such as the wagon chase at the end. I didn't know they had pies in the old west. Great movie.

Grade: Between A+ and A.

10.Ballad of Cable Hogue starring: Jason Robards, Stella Stevens, David Warner, Strother Martin, Slim Pickens

VHS : Ballad of Cable Hogue
Confounding expectation, Peckinpah's follow up to "The Wild Bunch" is a broad comedy. The humour is on a pretty juvenile level though and a scene in the middle where a drunken priest (David Warner) consoles a grieving woman is particularly idiotic and demeaning to women (one could write a whole thesis about Peckinpah's misogyny and generally warped attitude to women). Despite this, Peckinpah does recreate the atmosphere of an old Western town and extends the boundaries of the Western genre.
