VHS : Gone To Texas
I did not particularly liked the movie. I think it was done on the cheap, too full of cliches, macho posturing, and as usual depicted the foes of Bowie, Crockett, and other defenders of the Alamo as unconscionable, mean people, misstatements, and with omissions of truths. I personally do not recommend the movie to anyone.

VHS : Dark Command (Colorized)
After Wayne hit the jackpot in John Ford's groundbreaking Western STAGECOACH (1939) he was quickly reunited with his co-star Claire Trevor in ALLEGHENY UPRISING (1939) and again here in the DARK COMMAND (1940). Directed by Raoul Walsh, the man who incidentally gave young Michael Morrison his first starring role as a very young "John Wayne" in THE BIG TRAIL (1929) but it was a box office failure and Wayne was relegated to mainly B-Westerns until rescued by John Ford.

The fact based story is from the period starting just before the outbreak of the American Civil War depicting growing tensions on the Kansas Missouri border leading up to the infamous William Quantrill and his guerrillas burning down the town of Laurence, Kansas on August 21 1863. Based on the novel by W R Burnett Will ... Read More

VHS : Geronimo (1962)
I viewed this movie as a decent Western, if taken as pure American mythology, in the same spirit as Longfellow's "Song of Hiawatha". Unlike, however, Longfellow's epic and flowing lyric, "Geronimo" gets bogged down in some noticably stupid aspects; most obviously, the ludicrous casting of the blonde/blue eyed Chuck Connors as the lead. Although, it appeared as though real Native Americans were cast as extras, all major Apache roles seemed to be filled by whites.

Another imbecility was that the beautiful actress who played Geronimo's wife was repeatly seen in the middle of the New Mexican/Mexican wilderness perfectly suited in nice clean clothes, perfect hair and make-up. I didn't know that Apache women used Avon products.

The illiterate Geronimo is also seen pontificating ... Read More

4.Wyatt Earp starring: David Andrews, Linden Ashby, Adam Baldwin, Kevin Costner, Jeff Fahey

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

VHS : Wyatt Earp
Wyatt Earp came out around the same time as Tomb Stone. It seemed that Tomb Stone over shadowed Wyatt Earp for some reason but I much preferred Wyatt Earp. Dennis Quad is a much better Doc Holiday than Val Kilmer. In fact, as much as I like Kilmer him being Doc Holiday was one of the things that kept Tomb Stone from appealing to me. On the other hand, Quad's Doc Holiday is one of Wyatt Earp's strong points. Kostner is excellent in this role. He is able to show Wyatt's personality changes throughout the movie as events effect his life. This is a long movie but it has a good pace that makes the three plus hours go by quickly. Not as well as Pearl Harbor did but not bad. Even though the movie is long, and they cover a lot of territory, I couldn't help feeling that there were some holes left unfilled ... Read More

7.Outlaw (B&W) starring: Jack Buetel, Thomas Mitchell, Jane Russell, Walter Huston, Mimi Aguglia

VHS : Outlaw (B&W)
The only reason this film gets two stars is because of Jane Russell. Howard Hughes was no John Ford. But surprisingly, he wasn't bad as a director. He wasn't good, but he wasn't bad. The only reason to watch this film is for Jane Russell's debut. The script is inane, and the acting by the leads will make you cringe. But bountiful Jane wears low cut tops, and when she bends over -- holy mackeral. And there is more fun to the film in the close-ups Hughes takes of Jane emoting impending sex. Hughes intention was for Jane to be erotic, but the expressions on her face are not of this world. There is no man that has ever seen these facial contortions on a woman. Trust me. Buy a used copy, only for these scenes. It is worth the laugh.

VHS : Geronimo - An American Legend
It contains touching scenes and dialogues. For example, all the Apache Indian Scouts of the American Army were stripped of their guns and sent to "reservation area" after Geromino surrrendered. They were treated like traitors even though they had loyally served the Army.

In another scene, Geromino (Wes Studi) said "Do not hate each other. We have so few people left now".

In another one, Geromino asked Gen. George Crook (Gene Hackman) "Why your people have to take all the land? There is so much land. Why the Indians can't have any?"

The shooting scenes are fast, and deadly but there are few. This more a drama than an action Western.

The acting is gripping. Gene Hackman is convincing as Gen. George Crook. Jason Patric is so moving and admirable as the real Lt. Charles ... Read More
