VHS : The Winds of War
This is my first purchase of anything that had to deal with the 2nd world war. Sure, I've watched Private Ryand and Bands of Brothers but this series showed the makeup behind the USA getting slapped at Pearl Harbor. If anyone is looking for a history lesson via the DVD arena, this series sums it up within 15 hours.

VHS : War and Remembrance, Vol. 2 (Boxed Set)
This is quite a bit longer than Winds of War and it may not need to be. I skip over parts that deal with the trials and tribulations of people who, in Winds of War wandered around Europe not heeding good advice to get out while they could. Here, again, they are places where they should not be. I originally taped Winds of War and then made an edited copy I called "The Pug Henry Story". I have not done that with the DVD or with War and Remembrance, though I sense such an edit would be very desirable. In the meantime, get ready to fast forward or skip chapters to bring this down to a reasonable length.

VHS : Man From Uncle 1: Project Strigas & Never
UNCLE was a fondly remembered show - not always even, but pretty fun. Now this collection has great episodes and is the ultimate mind-warp for 60's TV fans. In short: Capt. Kirk vs. Spock and Col. Klink - then - Napoleon shoots the Joker and saves Agent 99! What more do you need?

VHS : Man From U.N.C.L.E. - Vol. 7, The Five Daughters Affair (Parts 1 & 2)
The idea of a man obsessed with obtaining the formula to extract
gold from seawater is a rather silly idea, regardless of how many
guest stars are used to get one to view this fumbling two-parter.
Save the money from not buying it for some fine Japanese cuisine.

VHS : The Man From U.N.C.L.E., Volume 18: The Green Opal Affair & The Dove Affair (UNCLE)
"The Green Opal Affair" and "The Dove Affair" are both 1st season episodes. Not one of my favorite episodes.

Episode 6 "The Green Opal Affair": UNCLE gets a new recruit when suddenly, he goes out of control. Before he drops into unconsciousness, he says Green Opal and the name Walter Brach (Carroll O'Connor). They find out that Walter Brach is an eccentric man who yearly visits an area called the Green Opal. No one knows why he goes there. Napoleon on orders goes to investigate, going undercover by being hired as a temporary secretary to Brach. When the arrive at Green Opal, he joins up with Chris Linnel (Joan O'Brien), a woman who is kidnapped by Brach's men. They are both captured and we find out that Brach is really a THRUSH agent. THRUSH has developed a way to control people's mind, making ... Read More

VHS : The Man from U.N.C.L.E. #16: The J for Judas Affair / The Master's Touch Affair
This pairing of fourth-season MFU episodes is certainly one worth checking out. The first episode, "The J For Judas Affair", stars Chad Everett and Broderick Crawford as father and son of a large multinational conglomerate, responsible for making most of the world's weapons. Son Adam Tenza (Everett) is, however, in cahoots with THRUSH, and schemes to take the company away from his father for THRUSH's purposes. A very strong episode, with excellent writing and entertaining plot twists, not to mention a spectacular scene with Solo and Illya breaking into the Tenza underground vault. The episode wraps in the jungles of Guatamala and ends this whodunit with a horrifying surprise.

The second episode, "The Master's Touch Affair", stars Jack Lord as THRUSH defector Pharos Mandor, who's feeding names ... Read More

VHS : The Avengers '65: Set 1
The Avengers was one of the hippest shows of its day, and manages to stand the test of time pretty well. It achieved its maximum popularity in 1965-66, when streamlined for exportation to America, which was when Diana Rigg was hired to replace the departing Honor Blackman. Prior, The Avengers was essentially a weekly live crime melodrama a la Agatha Christie, interspersed with some occasional spy hijinks. Once Rigg was brought aboard, the show's budget increased, it was transferred to film with more location shooting, the music got jazzier and the approach sexier (Emma Peel's name was contracted from "M"an-Appeal), and the stories grew to be more laced with science-fiction. It proved at least as popular in the States as it was in its parent Britain, and a legend was born.

The show was never better ... Read More

VHS : Man From U.N.C.L.E. - Vol. 4, The Galatea Affair/The Come With Me to the Casbah Affair
The movie-length episodes on this one are great, so much so I had one imported to my house in England (cause you can't get U.N.C.L.E stuff over here). Watch out though, one of the episodes was turned into a TV movie and is often shown on TNT...
