VHS : The African Queen
What a work of art! This is one of the best movies of all time. When the spinster missionary woman (Hepburn) must TOLERATE Mr. Arnaut (Bogart)
in their life-threatening trip down the river in a beat-up old boat, The African Queen, the fun begins. She can drum up no respect for this man--until she realizes that he is an intelligent person who may be able to save their lives by his cool wit. He good naturedly sloughs off her constant criticism, while she endures his slovenly ways and colorful language. At some point they start developing a strong like for each other. When Bogie finally shaves, well you know romantic sparks are about to fly. Movies or stories do not come any better than this.

VHS : Ivanhoe (1982)
I am so SAD about having to say negative things about this film. I'm a devout disciple of Ivanhoe, and a mesmerized fan of Anthony Andrews, so it feels like treachery to say that I've never been so disappointed in a film...What a CAST. But such meaningless drivel for dialog... True, this version DID include Athelstane, but to what purpose? He added nothing, he was totally incidental---well, blast it, WILFRED was incidental...And, bless her heart, that cute little girl didn't look remotely Saxon...And lovely Olivia looks more as if she's distressed and confused by the quality of the production than by deep love for Wilfred or impending immolation...By the time they tie her to the stake, she looks like she just wants out under any circumstance. I BELIEVED Elizabeth Taylor in the old version---I WANTED to ... Read More

VHS : The Last of the Mohicans
Nathaniel (Daniel Day-Lewis) falls in love with Cora (Madeleine Stowe), while serving as a guide for the British army during the French and Indian War. On the plus side, the cinematography is gorgeous and the story maintains a reasonable degree of historical accuracy, at least by Hollywood standards. But this is also "epic filmaking" at it's most melodramatic and overwrought. For example, there is tons of slow-motion camera work, usually of DDL running through the wilderness or making some impossibly accurate rifle shot.

In addition, the characters lack nuance, with Nathaniel depicted as a hero of near mythic proportions and Magua (Wes Studi) as the evil, treacherous Huron villan. To the film's credit, the British were shown to have a few "bad guys" as well, including Cora's father Colonel Munro. ... Read More

VHS : Jungle Book (1994)
I haven't read the book, so I don't know how accurate the film is, but I enjoyed this version of "The Jungle Book". It's all about a grown up Mowgli's struggle to fit in with British colonial society, after he is lured out (more or less) by Kitty, a girl he knew as a child before he was lost to the jungle, a girl who just happens to be the local Colonel's daughter. Her boyfriend, a British soldier called William, doesn't like Mowgli at all, but he is however terribly fascinated by the golden dagger Mowgli found in the jungle...

It's worth a look. Sam Neill and John Cleese are both in the film, and I enjoyed their performances, I usually do when they're in films. Jason Scott Lee as Mowgli wasn't too bad either, though I haven't really seen him in much else. The Indian location was a great idea, and added ... Read More

About 1959, I would have been 8 years old, my great aunt Louise saw "The Buccaneer" and had a stroke. She had a stroke each time she saw it. She saw it 5 more times and died.

The term "Kentucky Long Rifle" did not exist prior to the battle of NO; {NO}; it was the "Pennsylvania Rifle" from 1739 to 1815.

LaFitte's part is overstated. The exact Brit battle plan was delivered to Jackson by two of George washington's former spies, Owen Thomas and William Thomas, sr.

On the frontier, the 1776 war for independence never paused but continued till the 1820s, with the Brits using Indian proxies wherever possible.

The vastly outclassed Americans were driven to innovation and the Kentucky Long Rifle was one result. The way it happened was Daniel Morgan's Sharpshooters ... Read More

High Road to China -- captures viewer from the start. Drama, thriller, comedy, romance, cinematography, authenticity all combine to make a modern classic. I simply can't wait for another generation to see and fall in love with this timeless adventure. It simply gets better with time. Adored this movie when I was 30 and love it more now that I am 50 something.

VHS : Bond: On Her Majesty's Secret Service
This and Casino Royale are my all time Bond favorites. The special effects are somewhat hokey but that's what makes it so much more entertaining. The pace is a little slower than the new flicks but you have time to digest the plot. The other Jameses aren't as captivating.

I have to say that I love Steve McQueen's movies. The Getaway,Bullitt, The Cincinnati Kid, The Thomas Crown Affair, Nevada Smith, Hell Is For Heroes, The Great Escape, Papillon and many more films are in my library. This film is his most personal to me. It may not have been his most passionate film with car chases and motorcycles. But his acting was never more passionate than this.

This title is a HUGE improvement over the standard dvd. One thing about this film. I cant say what the director intended. Only he knows that. There is film grain throughout. This could very well be the way it was intended. As Speilberg presented aving Private Ryan. If that is the case....this title is dead on. Super clean, no scratches, blemishes at all. The skintones are right on the money. Facial expressions look very clean and detailed. The backgounds ... Read More
