1.Day of the Jackal starring: Edward Fox, Terence Alexander, Michel Auclair, Alan Badel, Tony Britton

VHS : Day of the Jackal
One of the rare films that surpasses the book it is based on. This classic thriller desperately needs to be issued in a special edition. There are brief sequences in the movie that are missing in the DVD. Notably the scene when the Jackal goes up the stairs in the Austrian hotel, and back down to the lobby when he notices the bodyguard hiding in the landing. In addition we need some special features: the making of the film, historical background to the story and a biography of Fred Zinneman.

when so many inferior movies have DVDs repackaged and reissued in every way possible, it is unbelievable that this ultimate political thriller should be neglected.

VHS : Brother Cadfael Series 3 Box Set: The Rose Rent, A Morbid Taste for Bones, and The Raven in the Foregate
These three mysteries, based in England during the Middle Ages, are really quite well done. Of the three I think A Morbid Taste For Bones was probably the best.

The Cadfael mysteries are not just good mysteries; they also provide an interesting look at life in the Middle Ages and how things were done, the role of the Church, Royal officers, etc.

3.Red Dawn starring: Patrick Swayze, C. Thomas Howell, Lea Thompson, Charlie Sheen, Darren Dalton

VHS : Red Dawn
You have to admit, it's a great premise. What would America look like and do if war was conducted on our own soil instead of across an ocean? But instead of going the conventional way of showing you anything and everything about it, director John Milius decided to give this depressing scenario a view from a bunch of high school kids. We don't even know the full extent of the attack until the middle of the movie. Interesting concept sure, but what looks good on paper almost never works when fully attempted.

First off, with the exception of a young Charlie Sheen, the acting is bad... as in pathetic. Patrick Swayze is a guy you wouldn't expect this from, but he's one of the worst offenders. Then there's the plausibility of the Wolverine story. Sure, it's possible that a band of high schoolers ... Read More

Well organized DVD, with plenty of extras. Learned quite a bit behind the scenes. Effective box, captures the Dirty Harry feel. You can't go wrong unless you are going to Blue Ray.

This is not the fastest action movie out there but it is VERY COOL! How many other movies show the guys changing magazines in their submachine guns at the proper time? No shooting the guns all day without reloading! Has a good solid story line, some cool one-liners and a lot of neat stunts. This movie is worth adding to your collection. Now to get it on DVD.

While this is a reasonably enjoyable bit of spy vs. spy escapism, the quality of this rental download is pathetic. I rented this film to watch on my laptop during a recent airline trip and frankly, I was a bit shocked. It's quite obviously been transferred from a twenty year old edited for TV analog video tape complete with choppy breaks for commercials and awful audio and video quality.

Amazon should really be embarrassed to offer (let alone charge money for) this version. This is certainly not what customers expect when they rent or purchase an Unbox Video. (Thankfully, it's the exception and not the rule)

9.Bond: Thunderball starring: Sean Connery, Claudine Auger, Adolfo Celi, Luciana Paluzzi, Rik Van Nutter

VHS : Bond: Thunderball
Taking into account inflation, THUNDERBALL is, by far, the biggest grosser in the series. In 2008 dollars the film would have grossed nearly a billion dollars. It has some slow moments but by and large it is a large scale world shaking epic. The threat of nuclear blackmail has a sense of urgency that the remake, NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN, never achieves. Connery gives his most relaxed performance as Bond, Adolfo Celli is meancing as Largo, Claudine Auger stunning as Domino and Luciana Paluzzi as a deadly liason for Bond. Remembered for the underwater battle the film is based on Fleming's novel which inturn was based on a screenplay by himself, Jack Whittingham and Kevin McClory -- the basis for a major lawsuit that has reverberated over the decades and resulting in NSNA in 1983 (releasing the same year as Roger Moore's outing OCTOPUSSY ... VHS : Brother Cadfael Series 1 Box Set: The Sanctuary Sparrow, One Corpse Too Many, Monk's Hood and The Leper of St. Giles
These are the best of the series. It may be your introduction to the books or a chance to see the stories you've loved come alive.
These are the closest to the books (the characters and stories suffer some distortions) and perfectly cast and acted.
