VHS : Batman & Robin
In the original "Batman" & "Batman Returns," the storylines (or what shreds there were) were overwhelmed by the comic-book schtick left over from the wonderful 1960's "Batman" series. The schtick was fine for the series, but for the films...AUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. GOOD GRIEF! In "Batman Forever," Akiva Goldsman took over the screenwriting duties and the schtick was eliminated, giving way to a firmly grounded storyline. The same with its excellent follow-up "Batman & Robin" (which I fail to see why it performed badly at the box office). Sadly, the franchise went into hibernation after this great film. There was only one thing missing (for which I would've given it 4/1/2 stars, but I decided on giving it the full 5, since this site doesn't allow reviewers to give half-star ... Read More

Keaton and Basinger are very bland, and some new guy named Knoxx is all over the place and Gordon ain't in much. And the Joker upstages Batman. But the dark feel would rub off on many comic-book adaptions, and the big success would lead to more superhero films. (For better or worse.) And Jack Nicholson is very good, amd the set and score are amazing. Worth a rent.

VHS : Fortune and Men's Eyes
This was a decent prison film that hooked the viewer & kept you interested in the plot. The characters were fun to watch & interesting. It appealed to the viewer on more of a psychological level. Overall, not a bad way to spend a couple of hours. Not over-the-top like many of today's prison films which heavily rely on blood & gore. This one has depth to its characters & I thought this was truly well done. It's based on a play by the same name. If you like good, offbeat prison pictures that examine its characters & maintains realism in the process, this is a good choice. It's a cult classic. I wonder when MGM will finally get on the ball & put this on DVD.

VHS : Bulldog Drummond
Silent screen star Ronald Colman, in his first "talking" role plays Capt. "Bulldog" Drummond in the dated and inane 1929 yarn of the same name. The players for the most part are guilty of overacting, particularly the hammy performance of Colman love interest Joan Bennett playing Phyllis Benton.

Colman is a self described demobilized World War I officer who is both affluent and bored with his existence. To liven up his life he places a classified ad indicating his desire for adventure. He answers an ad for a mysterious tryst in the English countryside with who else but Bennett. With his annoying sidekick and stereotypical British dandy and buffoon Algy played by Claud Allister in tow they become immersed in risky business. Bennett's rich uncle John Travers is being held against his will in an insane ... Read More

VHS : Getaway
A high charged Sam Peckinpah action film with Steve McQueen as Doc McCoy and Ali MacGraw as his wife. Sprung from prison to work a heist for millionaire oilman Ben Johnson, a crooked henchman sends the whole thing into a free fall with McQueen and MacGraw trying to stay one step ahead of the bad guys. Also starring Slim Pickens. Steve McQueen shows just how damage one man can achieve with a pump-action .12-gauge. Forget the rancid Alec Baldwin retread. This is the one.

DO NOT get this for superlative acting or cinematic brilliance. It's just SO silly that it is priceless and highly enjoyable. The villains are a bit weak especially the Joker, but the Dynamic Duo are as camp and corny as ever. Could have been a little bit shorter. Otherwise classic silly entertainment - the shark and bomb scenes are so ridiculous they have to be seen to be believed. Hilarious!

Campy Batman can work with a good cast and right atmosphere, but here it mixes with dark Batsy and has a bad cast. (Except Jim Carrery.)
