VHS : Island of the Blue Dolphins
Alone, on a deserted island. No weapons. Animal predators lurking where you can't see. A need for food. A drive for survival. That pretty much covers Karana's life, when her tribe sails away, and leaves her in the remains of living by herself, for years to come. There's numerous things she has to teach herself how to do--and many things that she'll discover that she will not do again. She has to learn exactly how to fend for herself--it's a life or death matter. After all, no one may ever come back to find her...

Awesome book, very eccentric--Not your average read!
You'll have to find out how Karana becomes courageous enough to take on her natural state of isolation.

2006: Given the time constraints of a movie, this version does not develop the characters very well which is the cornerstone of Janes' writing, the spoken word does not follow the book, the characters are not as mannerly as they are written in the book, major parts of the book are missing (ie., the Bingley sisters, many of the piano performances by Elizabeth are missing, some of the balls are not in this version), the English dialect is not constantly spoken. I given this version 3 stars.

1996: Given the luxious length, this version does develop the characters very well, is true to Janes' book, is stellar in the use of manners of the day, major parts of the book are not missing including the best part of the whole series which is Janes' performance at Penberly on the piano - she and Mr. Darcy ... This volume contains a lot that is very good. Its structure is a bit forced (nine innings, or periods, of baseball history). The 9th inning, as others have noted, covers a large time frame compared with earlier "innings." I'm not sure that the decade is the best way of organizing baseball history, either. Still and all, that's more a matter of taste than anything else.

The book's authors candidly observe that they will focus on eastern teams, e.g., Boston Red Sox and Brooklyn Dodgers, "because we felt their stories especially rich in the human drama that accompanies the history of every team." However, I agree with a reviewer (who bears the name of one of Detroit's best first basemen ever) who laments that this really does slight the deep baseball history that covers much more territory than New ... After seeing part of this DVD on Public Television I was so intrigued I ordered the book and this DVD. This film was beautifully done and the scenery of the area which was the real setting for the story was exceptional. It follows the book very closely. Only a few noticeable editorial changes which did not negatively affect the story.

Listen, the actors performing here are all outstanding. The problem is that the script was written for a group of much younger men.

I mean, come on! George C. Scott in Lee Cobb's original role does that corny, over-acted ending about being stabbed with the knife by his son - he looks like he's in his '90s here -
What's his son? Seventy? Get over it, George! It's just ridiculous.

Forget this film - see the play or buy the original film.

VHS : The Century-America's Time (Boxed Set)
As for the person who complained that Martin Scorcese called the '80's the "me" decade, that was a popular theme of the time. Maybe you should go back and look at 80's and the literature about it from all kind of sources. Just like the 20's was often refered to as the "Roaring" 20's. 80's was often called the "me" decade. I also think it is not a liberal or conservative designation. Following the internalization of values and desires in the 70's, the 80's was when technology, growth, income and development all led to the application of the 70's trend of an individual ethic. People DID become more selfish and self centered, more complacent, in need of more instant gratification.
