VHS : Hellboy (Dol Slip)
Comic book fans have high I.Q.'s. It's true, so sue me. But Hollywood insists that comic books are for stupid people. Sure. It makes sense. I mean--look at 'em! They're comic books, for cripes sake! So, along comes a guy who isn't from around here and doesn't know about the "comic books are dumb" rule. Guillermo del Toro makes a comic book movie as if comic books mattered. It ain't perfect, but it's a lot closer to a real comic book experience than any of the other "big time" movies that started out as comics. My friend, if you want to understand the soul of the comic book, you should watch Hellboy. Then you will understand. Maybe.

Actually, the movie is a teensy bit hard to follow.

There are script problems in the movie, that became story problems, that became editing ... Read More

VHS : The Stepfather
Well, I have to kick myself in the butt.. The Stepfather series is perhaps the best slasher series since the original psycho. Although pt 2 and 3 had been released on dvd, I hesitated on purchaseing them due to hoping the 1st movie would be released, which it never has. Now that I have waited, it looks like pt 2 and 3 are soon to be no longer avaliable on dvd... Does this mean that there will be a boxed set released with pt 1, 2, and 3 together? God I hope so. If this were so I would buy it without a doubt. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE RELEASE ALL THREE STEPFATHER DVDS TOGETHER!

VHS : Journey to the Center of the Earth
An adventurous science fiction film, 1959's Journey to the Center of the Earth is perhaps the most accurate adaptation of the outstanding Jules Verne novel of the same name. With Academy Award-nominated special effects, stunning sets, and monstrous prehistoric creatures, the film is smartly paced and essential viewing for fans of the story. Much of the dialogue attests to its age, and the many excuses to squeeze star Pat Boone's singing into the film might lessen its chance of appealing to newer audiences, but as a nostalgic Harryhausen-esque venture, it doesn't disappoint.

In 1880 Edinburgh, Sir Oliver Lindenbrook (James Mason, who takes second billing) discovers a plumb bob buried in a piece of lava rock, with a written clue from an Icelandic scientist who believed that a world existed within Earth. He sends ... Read More

VHS : The X-Files (Movie)
My family has recently become huge fans of the X-files TV show (thanks to reruns on the Sci Fi channel), so we were excited to see that they had actually released a movie back in the late 90's. I read several of the bad reviews that this movie received, but we really liked it when we first watched it. True, it's a little different from the TV series in that it was hard for them to try & fit in all of the usual cast members, but overall, we were really surprised at just how much we liked this movie. It was very suspenseful & it kept us rivited to the very end. Can't wait to see the new 2008 movie version as well!

Attack of the Clones???
I knew we were in trouble after hearing the title.
I was right.
I didn't even want to see this because Maul wasn't in it.
Christopher Lee is a legend but even his presence couldn't fill Maul's shoes (boots?)
The acting? Horrid!!!
The love scene with Anakin and Padme? The whole audience was laughing it was so bad.
I don't blame Hayden.
I think him and Portman should have won best actors for being able to keep straight faces during the filming of that scene.
"I love you Padme"
" I feel your beating heart Padme" Or whatever he said.
C 3PO shows more emotion.
Bad.
Bad.
Bad.
The lightsaber fight with Anakin? WAY too short.
And what's up with the name Darth Tyrannus. What's next Darth Pterodactyl?
Give me a break!!!

VHS : The Keep
This early effort from Michael Mann is flawed in many ways. It seems like it was rushed into release, with choppy editing and an annoying score by Tangerine Dream. I read the book a while back, then saw the film when it first came out. With the advent of DVDs, I sold my VHS; haven't seen it in years. Still, there are brilliant images that have remained in my memory, and I would buy the DVD in a minute. A commentary from Mr. Mann, who has since become immensely respected, would be welcome. The film is, indeed, faithful to the book (well, as much as most films are) and retains the requisite suspense. Scott Glenn is a good actor, but he's not my idea of romantic leading man material. Jurgen Prochnow is a sufficiently bad Nazi, and good beats evil. How it happens is what's interesting, and I'm pining for a DVD. Anyone else agree?
