As the next reviewer states, these are recorded in EP mode and the quality suffers, BUT WHAT A COLLECTION! I was especially pleased to see that the 10th tape was Sean O'Casey's Juno and the Paycock. Hitchcock's early films are such a joy: German Expressionism, slapstick comedy, long, long takes that show off the stage sense of the actors and Hitchcock himself, the beginnings of his particular film style, and his deep sense of social justice. If you can afford The Early Years DVD Collection you will get most of the same films, with the exception of The 39 Steps and Juno and the Paycock, but for the price this beats anything.

I am very glad I got this collection, new, when I did! This set of mini-documentaries and interviews are a treasure that is woefully overlooked in the growing interest in silent film groups. Oh - to have it in DVD! The silent star recounting their excitement and memories are infectious. This is a classic work - very well done - and but for the intro music and some graphics, holds it's age . Without a doubt this collection leaves out a good many masterpieces, but it gathers, in one fell swoop, 13 films from the last four decades of Hitchcock's career. Even the most dated show Hitchcock's brilliant irreverence, his "what can go wrong goes wrong", his Hollywood Stars entangled in a nest of the most talented supporting casts around. The 14th tape contains four episodes from the TV show "Alfred Hitchcock Presents", each of which includes a toungue-in-cheek introduction by Hitchcock himself. One of the episodes is the wry "Lamb to the Slaughter", screenplay by Roald Dahl. The quality of the tapes is quite good. I bought my set new and indeed the shrink wrap showed a sticker marked $179.99 although I paid much less. Wait around for a price friendly to you.

...more care should have been taken to correct/optimize the audio ......these episodes are wonderful classics and I love the collection of episodes, but the audio quality is not up to par and should be as this is not a public domain "b" series sort of DVD release -- this should have been produced with more care and the sound (and video) should have been remastered -- the technology is there - it just wasn't used.

If anyone wants to know why Chaplin was such a huge star and remains a legend to this day they just need to watch him at work in this series. A graceful, athletic, and uniquely artistic performer he had many imitators but none of them came close to his ability. Many of the films in this series are not available anywhere else. It's also a great historical record that reflects the early 1920's; the autos, clothing, apartment interiors and furniture; the way things were 80 years ago; the way our great grandparents lived.
