This serial had many firsts. I recognized the actor Bruce Bennett who went on to make dozens of movies and live into the 21st century. Ayn Rand would have loved the heavy, known by his prison number 39013.
My cildhood buddy still uses it as his liscence number. It is the story of how a bitter, spiteful failure sets out to destroy a "good capitalist"
Like the movies of its day it had good role models, but was not above using a comic sterotype black as the house servant, whose small daily frustrations are actually laughed at. In his bio, director William Witney was aware of this, but foundjustificatio in the fact a role was even created for mostly out-of-work black actors. The heroine is Carole Landis, a beautiful girl whose career took her to stardom at 20th Century Fox then downhill ... Read More

A compilation of a "chapter movie" that I saw on successive Saturday afternoons growing up in New York in the 40s. Perhaps, even at that early age, I was fascinated by the idea of an attractive, long-legged heroine and a similarly fascinating villainess. A cute, if implausible, adventure tale, set in North Africa, which today would seem almost a parody, but I'm enjoying the trip down memory lane which it's affording me at not too high a cost. One of the "bad guys" is an Italian, so identified, possibly because they were part of the Axis, w/ which we were (or were about to be) at war but not the object of pathetic ridicule that Italians became in the war movies that followed.

There are several Roy Rogers movies that are listed as color when they are not. This is one of those. They are made by Alpha Omega Publications and dated Oct.19th, 2004. This movie is in B&W and not in color. The film quality of this movie in general is not very good regardless of who makes it. The orginal film must not be in very good condition.

A group of riders come singing into town. Next we see a man in a buggy fleeing while being fired upon. The pursuers plant evidence to prove the man was a thief. Roy Rogers rides to the mine to investigate. The mine manager explains their policy against thieves. A letter to Roy says a writer will arrive to get information for a book. There is a surprise here! The boys sing a song boasting of their courage. [How many bullets in a six-shooter? Sixteen? The script plays with the western legends.] This "horse opera" mixes in singing and music with dramatic events. There is a secret to the San Angelo mine. It is being used to bring silver from a low-cost area to a high-price area; they are arbitrageurs and smugglers.

The padre asks for help to find a missing sentry. They search all night and find nothing. There is no time to ... Read More

The old-time movie serials should never be judged by the same criteria of other films, even those made at the same time period. The serials were invariably outrageous, over-the-top, often ridiculous. But unlike Adam West's `Batman' the serials were never self-conscious or deliberately campy. Although many serials featured a mildly humorous characters such as Jimmy Olsen or Whitey Whitney to provide occasional comic relief, on the whole, the actors and directors played everything straight and extremely earnest, no matter how absurd the situation or the scene. They did their best at every test.

The old movie serials were made with practically zero budget and at a forced-march pace, shooting in two days what would take 6 months under modern conditions. Those factors, combined with the primitive special effects then available ... Read More

The film opens with a song and a wagon train. The Sheriff drops by with Mr. Burnett to see Roy Rogers about a $10,000 debt that he is anxious to collect. Roy asks for more time, a few weeks. One lady has lost her suitcase. Roy finds the contents scattered along the road, then owner Candy shows up and complains. A masked man rides up to rob Roy; he wants that photograph. The local hotels are all full. The Constable puts up Roy and tells about his past. "The Gypsy" is wanted for questioning, a $10,000 reward for the man who robs oil companies. There is a song for entertainment, and some comedy. Show Business isn't paying well. A private conversation reveals a hidden secret.

There is a conflict between two women, then two men, to add drama. At the camp somebody shoots at Rico. Will Lolita take Candy away? Was that a double who jumped on the horse? Will ... Read More

First is the great setting, not the Iverson Ranch in California, but the breathtaking, now famous corridor between Moab, Arches National Park, and the beautiful Ls Sal Mountains in Utah. I would have titled it "The Singing Arrows", but "The Rider" a beautiful and mysterious girl, comes across in great photo angles as something mythical. I missed this one as a kid, having vague memories of The Phantom Rider and the Secret of Treasure Island. The music, while vintage Republic, is what you recognized the first time you heard the Valkyrie, and also uses Les Preludes, the original Star Wars type music used by Universal in Flash Gordon. The extras are actually better and more authentic "Mexican" types than appear in Zorro's Fighting Legion( its one negative) and the same set is used in both movies. Hoot Gibson was always a lot of fun and an authentic, real trooper, like ... Read More
