VHS : 12 Angry Men
Watching this 1997 version of 12 ANGRY MEN recently, I was struck by the fact that four of the 12 actors in key roles here have since passed away. That has absolutely nothing to do with the film's quality, of course (or nothing directly to do with it), but it is striking that key members of this impressive cast--and of course, I'm referring to Jack Lemmon, George C. Scott, Hume Cronyn and Ossie Davis-- have gone on to that jury box in the sky.

As I say, the fact that these great actors have all died within the past decade is not a direct reflection on the film itself. But it does raise at least one issue that a previous reviewer has noted: namely, the question of the cast's relative age in comparison to the cast of the 1957 classic movie version. Jack Lemmon was 72 when he played ... Read More

Other reviews are right on the money. Brinks got kicked in the teeth cause they let their guard down. Some petty operators were able to boost the money becuase Brinks relied on their big name and past success to intimidate would-be crooks. I heard these guys lived on the money the rest of their lives without showing off. The film is great and the times are captured flawlessly in the sets and the language.

VHS : Boys in the Band
Let there be general rejoicing through the land at the DVD release of this landmark film! BOYS IN THE BAND is both brilliant, bitingly funny filmmaking and a penetrating examination of the (still) dysfunctional ways gay men cope with basic conflicts imposed by American society. Mart Crowley penned more memorable lines than any three Bette Davis films and Friedkin established a sense of place and mood in his main character's tony 1968 Manhattan apartment that is just uncanny. By the time LOOK OF LOVE plays, I couldn't tear myself away.

My upper lip involuntarily curls with contempt at the self-deception of gays who insist that we've come so far as to make BOYS IN THE BAND a tired irrelevancy. Consider the time elapsed between the making of this film and BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN. The issues raised ... Read More

VHS : Rampage
"Rampage" is a strange movie: it tells a small but nasty story of Charles Edgar Reece, a deranged young man on a killing spree, and the long courtroom battles that follow his arrest. What's so strange is that the movie seems awfully directed, even dull at times, more like a quicky or a routinely made-for-cable TV film. But its director is no one less than William Friedkin, the man who made such powerful films like "The French Connection", "The Excorsist" and "Sorcerer". Three movies which all had a lasting effect on its viewers.
The raw, almost documentery-like approach of Friedkin made these classics more than just entertaining fiction; they seemed real, and at some points very close to us.

So what happened on the set with Mr. Friedkin when he made "Rampage"? Was he bored, sick, or really ... Read More

VHS : The Exorcist (The Version You've Never Seen)
It's difficult to look back on a film "classic" and try to review it through today's eyes...35 years later. It's always tempting to say, "Those effects were great...for 1973" or "imagine how that affected an audience...three decades ago." You almost feel like you have to make excuses for the film.

But I am happy to report that in a very recent, pre-Halloween viewing, THE EXORCIST has withstood the test of time nearly unscathed. Yes, some of the effects (there are actually fewer than you would expect) are not up to the standards of today. The clothing is often hilariously tacky. Technology is primitive.

Yet William Friedkin's classically styled direction of William Peter Blatty's effectively unsettling novel still has the uncanny ability to give us the creeps today. Often (VERY often) imitated, but not ... Read More

Yeah...An ignorant person may assume that this movie represants ALL gays, and not just a small section. And to an even more ignorant person, it would correlant rough sex with murder and violence. But to people with half a brain, it is about a serial killer in an setting that most people don't find themselves in. Is that any different than a movie about a far away place or time, say the 1800's with Jack the Ripper, perhaps?

There are 2 reasons why I consider this a "great movie". 1) Movies are consider an "art form". And art is supposed create a reaction and stir up emotion. Ideally, even inspire behavior or action. This movie certainly does that. 2) Good art, or a good movie, should be provactive, and leave you thinking about it and feeling something about the people in it afterwards. And again, I think this movie does ... Read More

VHS : Guardian (1990)

I saw this movie in the 90's on TV. It's a very stilish horror fantasy, by far superior to "Cat People" (1982). Good story, great performances of Jenny Seagrove and Dwier Brown and astonishing visuals.
One of the main elements of this movie was the ill atmosphere, the mistery that was surrounding the entire plot, which reminded me of Stephen King's "Sleepwalkers" (1992).
Another good element that increased the gore and the suspense was the fact that we do know nothing about the origins of this ancient supernatural force.
You mustn't miss this amazing movie!!!
