VHS : Good-bye, My Lady
I was a little girl when my family saw this movie on a Friday night at the Drive-in theater when it was first released, way back when. The next morning Dad found a kennel in Santa Ana, CA that had basenji's and we went to check them out. Came home that day with a petite 6 month old red and white girl. 2 years later we added a Tri-colored boy to the family. I fell madly in love with them and always wanted one but could never afford the high price tag. Last summer I discovered the Basenji Rescue and Transport website on the internet and started watching for a red and white rescue basenji female. Thanksgiving Day "Gracie" came to live with my husband and I and we are in love. I still can't believe I have such a beautiful, sweet red girl on the end of the leash when we are out walking. Thank you ... Read More

This is an action-filled movie that gains momentum when the three brothers leave their family and join the French Foreign Legion together in a wave of disgust over their father's weaknesses. The brotherly affection and loyalty is the main theme of the story, and it is touching and heartrending without being overly sentimental. Cooper, Milland, Hayward and Donleavy are brilliant. It was, is, and always will be a great film about true nobility of the heart as opposed to nobility of the blood.

It is impossible to watch this at time breathtakingly beautiful movie without sadness not least because what survives is a mere fraction of the movie made by the great William Wellman -the studio interfered in the picture excising great swathes of the footage Wellman shot and adding a ponderous voice over narration declaimed in sonourous mannner by Howard Keel which adds nothing to the picture whatsoever .
It is a movie about the destruction of a way of life -that of the mountain men .The source material is a novel by Bernard de Soto which is based on the life of one such man , Flint Mitchell ,who controlled the trade with the Blackfoot Indians in the Rockies during the 1820,s .In many ways he was the very incarnation of the pioneer spirit , a trader and adventurer married to a Native American ,and the ... Very good movie. No bad words...no sexual situations (totally opposite of most of the movies being produced today), just a very good clean movie that makes you think about your life and your struggles and prompts you to consider that there is indeed a God who is watching over you..

I highly recommended it. I just want it on DVD!

6.Viva Villa starring: Wallace Beery, Fay Wray, Leo Carrillo, Donald Cook, Stuart Erwin

VHS : Viva Villa
Articles refer to the scene where Fay Wray's character is whipped while she laughs and claim that it was edited because of the newly enforced Production Code in July 1934. This is not accurate. In the 1960s, on either New York channel WNEW 5 or WCBS 2, that scene was shown regularly whenever "Viva Villa" was aired. There was also an additional scene showing Leo Carillo's character lining up 3 federal troops at a time, front to back, and shooting them with one bullet to save ammunition. Both scenes are edited out from the Turner Classics print, but they do exist and thus allow for the possibility of the film eventually being restored.

***** 1931. Directed by William A. Wellman. The screenplay earned an Academy award nomination. During the prohibition, Tom Powers and Matt Doyle become part of the Paddy Ryan gang and enjoy the mobster life. For a while. Cagney, Harlow and Blondell are great in this film any movie lover should own. At least, two scenes of THE PUBLIC ENEMY are already part of history: the grapefruit squeezed over the face of James Cagney's girl-friend and the final apparition of Cagney more spectacular than any movie of THE MUMMY serie. Masterpiece.

Well, I guess I'm out of step with most reviewers on this one. I'm a great fan of the Duke, but this is one of his worst films. I didn't buy the plot for a minute. The scenes between Lauren Bacall and Wayne show zero chemistry. Frankly, much as I love Bacall's early films, she never quite made the transition from alluring ingenue to fully adult actress. This film is Exhibit A as to why her career never made it to the heights it might have. I don't think Wayne's conversations with the invisible "Baby" work either. They are annoying and don't add anything to the film. Finally, I have no political objection to using Caucasian actors to play Asian parts. In this case, though, using such familiar faces as Paul Fix to play the Chinese villagers is a major distraction and detracts from the realism of the film. So, unless you are determined ... VHS : Battleground (1949)
There were lots of war movies made during and after WWII, and many of them starred Van Johnson. Most of them chose to look at the heroic side of battle or the lives of the people at home supporting the troops. Battleground is different. It examines the 101st Airborne Division during the Battle of the Bulge, a group of men fighting to stay alive and in good humor amid death, destruction, and fear. This is a grim story and much more realistic than the typical MGM film.

The all star cast includes Johnson, John Hodiak, Ricardo Montalban, George Murphy, Herbert Anderson, Scotty Beckett, and more. These men do a terrific job of bring a real incident to life. It is peppered with moments of humor like Johnson's bit with the eggs and moments of intense emotion. This collection of scenes makes for a powerful movie that is very telling of human nature ... 10.Adventures of Tom Sawyer starring: Tommy Kelly, Jackie Moran, Ann Gillis, May Robson, Walter Brennan

VHS : Adventures of Tom Sawyer
Everyone knows Mark Twain's story of Tom Sawyer. Just the mention of the name conjures up images of whitewashed fences, Indians, and treasure. Tommy Kelly plays Tom in this David O. Selznik Technicolor classic. A mischievious boy at heart, he causes commotion in the town when he runs away to play pirates, and returns to find that he has been assumed dead. When he reveals himself, he does not stay out of trouble for very long. He and Huckleberry Finn (Jackie Moran) become involved in a murder trial. After that, Tom and girlfriend Becky Thatcher (Ann Gillis) find themselves lost in the caves nearby.

The child stars are surprisingly unimpressive. Their antics seem natural enough, but Kelly nor Gillis have enough charm or spunk to cement themselves in the memory. The film is also uneven; the most exciting parts are the scenes in the caves, but everything before is mediocre. ... Read More
