I have to admit, I'm an avid listener of classical music. So it's a small wonder why Disney's Fantasia is one of my favorite films. Every music sequence is pure gold (except maybe the Pastoral sequence). Toccata and Fugue in D Minor by Johann Sebastian Bach = My second favorite sequence, it is a mixture of abstract colors & images, live action orchestral playing, and Stokowski's acclaimed orchestration of Bach's organ music. Nutcracker Suite by Peter Illich Tchaikovsky = Although I'm not a fan of Tchaikovsky's ballet music, this one is very good and entertaining. Walt said that the animation of Cinderella's dress changing with the wave of the Fairy Godmother's Wand was his favorite piece of animation of all.. I couldn't agree more. It is absolutely sparkling, glittery, magical fun. This movie holds up so well... we enjoy it over and again and it never occurs to me (or my children) that it is well over 50 years old. The story is timeless, the music is charming and we're absolutely wild about Jaq and Gus! The bonus features on this DVD are okay. The background/history was interesting. Otherwise, I was unimprssed with the bonus music, etc. But then, bonus features for older movies are rarely terrific because the original cast / staff is typically unavailable for interview.

I love this film, always have, always will. HOWEVER the color restoration turned practically every characters' hair red. Wendy and John certainly never had red hair before. Although the original color is dated, it is much more beautiful.

I was SO looking forward to this. I was born in the late 50's and grew up watching Johnny Appleseed and Pecos Bill on The Wonderful World of Disney. The opportunity to introduce my son to a cowboy who rode the cyclone was just too good to be true. Turns out, it really WAS too good to be true. Why has Disney decided to hack up all their old stuff? Why can't they leave the old films as they were created? Everyone KNOWS the times were different. What's next? Will the ever-present pipe be digitally removed from all the Popeye the Sailor cartoons? Will Tom and Jerry be edited to hit each other with foam bats instead of pots, pans, irons and the occasional safe? Just a quick review on my recent American Legends dvd purchased from Amazon. One word.. Fantastic. Amazon has to be my all time favorite place to shop. Whatever I purchase is always quickly delivered, in perfect condition, with no problems ever.. American Legends is a fantastic dvd for children of all ages. Educational plus entertaining to one and all. If you've never seen it, order it. You won't be sorry you did.
