VHS : The King and I
They don't make movies like the "The King and I" anymore. This movie is one of the classics that we sit down with our kids and watch once a year or so.

The plot is a solid telling of extream culture clash, pride, and love... all wrapped up the some of the best music and dancing ever put on film ("Shall We Dance" is one of the most memorable things I have ever seen). The acting is top rate and the sets are fantastic.

Don't miss this one and share it with your kids, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera!

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

VHS : Mother Wore Tights
Growing up, I used to watch this movie every time it came on Disney. Until 2003 it had never been released for retail purchase. I looked for it for years, and was thrilled when they finally started releasing some of the Grable classics. It's a great musical and the songs will stick with you forever. I've recently heard rumors that it is going to be released on DVD sometime in 2008.

VHS : But Not for Me
The film was actually a remake of an earlier 30s film called, "ACCENT ON YOUTH." Directed by a forgotten master, Wesley Ruggles, ACCENT ON YOUTH is a sparkling comedy that starred Herbert Marshall as the older (50ish) playwright, and Sylvia Sidney as his devoted secretary Linda. Marvelous Astrid Allwyn played Genevieve, the other woman--Allwyn, a familiar screen presence in the 30s with dozens of small parts to her credit, including an important one in CHARLIE CHAN'S SECRET. And amusingly Lon Chaney Jr. figured as one of the "young people" in ACCENT ON YOUTH. He wasn't yet typecast in horror parts.

In the 1950s remake, Gable plays the producer and Carroll Baker his young, naive assistant (the names are changed in the remake so she's no longer LINDA. They have a May-December ... Read More

VHS : Desk Set
When I was a college student in Stony Brook, New York in 1974, I skipped a class one cold winter morning to stay in my dorm room and watch "Desk Set" on my roommate's black and white portable TV. It was a revelation. Since then I have graduated to watching it on DVD on my large screen color TV, and it continues to be a revelation. I won't repeat all the accolades of previous reviewers - who DOESN'T love the scene on the freezing rooftop or the floating island on a rainy night while Tracy's shoes are cooking in the oven? - but there are lots of delightful lesser moments, such as when Hepburn despairs of getting married and suggests to Blondell that they live together and keep cats (Gertrude Stein, anyone?) or when the continuity person didn't do their job, and Hepburn leaves the office building ... VHS : Jackpot
JACKPOT is a hilarious peek into the private lives of a normal family in 1950 made suddenly mad by winning a big radio prize. This is great family fun and deserves a place in your collection. Why it has not yet been released on DVD is a mystery to me. However, if you have never seen it -- don't wait and purchase the VHS copy, because it's just that good.

VHS : Song of the Islands
Betty Grable is all peaches and cream and spectacular curves as she hulas her way to Hawaii. Song of the Islands also stars one of her favorite leading men, Victor Mature, one of her favorite supporting stars, Jack Oakie, and one of her favorite directors, Walter Lang. Put them all together in glorious Technicolor with plenty of songs, dances and comedy for one of Betty's biggest box office hits. Nothing serious here, folks, but musical-comedy fluff from Fox's backlot at its best. And the number one movie star of the 1940s---Betty Grable!

VHS : Weekend in Havana
Sequels? Prequels? In the old days, Hollywood just changed a few actors, re-wrote a few lines, changed the setting and added a few new dance numbers and Voila! New Film! This is factory film at its best! Most of the crew from "Song Of The Islands" is here, but Grable has been ditched for Alice Faye (Yahoo!) and Hilo Hattie for Carmen Miranda (Yahoo!)(and I love Hilo Hattie). Instead of two yachtsmen drifting ashore in Hawaii, Faye's cruise ship runs aground off Cuba. She saw the Captain where he shouldn't have been, and won't give in, so John Payne, agent for the shipping company (and soon to wed the boss's daughter) flies her to Havana, and escorts her the best he can. Carmen Miranda shows up and wiggles and jiggles her way in and amongst the english language and big hats; and way too quick, you're ... Read More
