VHS : Some Came Running
Wide Screen Color Bonanaza, Vincente Minnelli, Judy's hubby, known for lavish Hollywood Musicals, does a very theatrical late 1950's melodrama, almost Douglas Sirk like. Oh, the repressed sexuality and hypocracy. It's not a 50's Hitchcock masterpiece like Vertigo or To Catch a Thief, but the film's from a pot-boiler James Jones novel, takes itself pretty seriously, slicing away that exotic Indiana underbelly with Shirley MacLaine doin the cupie doll stereotype. Arthur Kennedy does not look like Frank Sinatra's brother, but he is slimey. Frank and Dean play, ah, Frank and Dean. Look, there's good scenes, despite some hokey steamy stuff.

The real meat of this film, the Sinatra-MacLaine insult and love me scenes, nice work and Dean comes in for a mean-turn that's kind of believable. ... Read More

This is not an historically accurate, intellectual movie. This is a fun and catchy and stick-in-your-head musical romp. I've been looking for this movie on DVD for years and can't wait for April! I have the soundtrack to tide me over til then. It's actually one of my favorite musicals from this time period because it does what a movie is supposed to do...it entertains!

VHS : The Long, Long Trailer
This is one of my favorite all time films. Definitely the best movie ever starring Lucille Ball. I am a long time Lucy fan, but that being said even if you didn't enjoy her television shows, this movie is a comedy film that should appeal to about anyone. None of the slapstick humor and dizzy redhead stuff you might imagine there to be. Lucy and Desi tie the knot and buy a long trailer house with all the modern features of the day. They set out as honeymooners Nicky and Tacy, off to introduce Nicky to Tacy's family. A lot of weird stuff happens on their journey to make this a long long honeymoon which just might bring a few second thoughts about ever having gotten married. I highly recommend this one to anyone. All the professionalism you have come to expect from these two hollywood moguls. A very delightful ... Read More

VHS : Tea & Sympathy
Seems that with the death of Deborah Kerr that there are still a number of her films that have never been transferred to DVd and this would be one at the top of that list. Despite its age, its horrific ending (that tacked on guilt ridden ending should be burnt and let the film end the way the stage play did), there is still some great work here from Deborah and John Kerr (despite looking late 20s at the time which he probably was) I recently transferred my old video off- the -TV print to DVD and whereas it is nice to have it on a DVD format, with a scratchy print, it badly cropped for TV, its like watching half the movie. Other films of Ms Kerr that should also travel quickly to DVD would be "Chalk Garden"and "Bonjour Tristesse"

VHS : I Dood It
This movie has lots to enjoy - great wartime entertainment by some of the big names in music at that time, good if recycled comedy, and great dancing by Eleanor Powell. However, its main problem is all of what I just mentioned. It can never seem to figure out if it is a romantic comedy, a musical, or a movie about wartime sabotage. It's probably about 3.5/5, but I rounded it up to 4 because it does grow on you.

The comedy is mainly recycled from Buster Keaton's last silent film, "Spite Marriage", and in fact Buster was a gag writer on this film and most of Red's other movies for MGM. Here Red Skelton plays Joe Reynolds, reprising Buster's part as a worker in a laundry enamored with stage actress Constance Shaw (Eleanor Powell). He manages to show up at the same places Shaw shows up at by borrowing his customers' formal attire. Just like ... Read More
