VHS : Hamlet (1969)
Tony Richardson has not received ample praise for successfully transferring a Shakespeare play to cinema in this marvelous film. Watch how Olivier grapples with the problem in films such as Henry V and then see how simply Richardson dissolves the question of whether what we see is on a stage or is supposed to be in a real-world setting by filming the actors in closeup predominantly and keeping the setting genuinely "in the background"--and a shadowy one at that. It helps that he filmed Hamlet, of course, set in the moody castle at Elsinore. Williamson is, to me, unforgettable in the title role. Anthony Hopkins is the best Claudius I have seen; precisely the nasty sty Hamlet calls him, and the highlight of the film is Hamlet's doing him in at last. The rendering of the duel is truly exciting ... Read More

I totally agree with every word of Robert Dahl's review - only I would never have been able to express the ideas so excellently.

Director Tony Richardson's 1965 black comedy THE LOVED ONE has a remarkable cast.

i saw this movie in high school, and they asked us why it ends the way it does. it wasn't at all clear to me why it ended that way. only reading the story gave me the answer to that, and there was no ambiguity about it. in the movie the ending doesn't seem to be supported by the action we've seen.

a good movie has to make a strong appeal to reality with the plot. it has to be true to the way people genuinely behave, or the story has no meaning. unless it's intentionally absurd or obscurant or comedic, which this story most definitely isn't.

in the movie the character is less angry and less of a deviant, he has feelings of guilt and defeat where the original character is much too tough and too hardened to have such feelings. and the movie has a lighter tone than the story. so it makes ... Read More

I found this DVD on the Charge of the Light Brigade to be an excellent piece of work. OF course one should read up on the major problems the British and French had in getting to the Crimea. All the actors did a great Job. The arrogance of the true Characters who were in the Crimea and in the War were portrayed with great accuracy by the actors. Couldn't have picked a better bunch of actors to bring this disaster to the screen. I recommend this movie to help understand what happen in the Crimean War. Hurdrey-Angus Jordan

try as i may, i cannot warm to diana ross' film debut as billie holiday in 'lady sings the blues'. her nervy, jittery energy leaves only when she sings the songs, which she does very well. and nothing except that music helps her find her way back to the 1930s and 1940s.

but her contemporary self finds a great home in her next film 'mahagony'. the first third of the film, the part that tony richardson was responsible for, is tight! it's a great set-up for a good hollywood-style romantic dramedy. ross' tracy is the consummate ambitious career girl and her swain brian is a fabulous foil for her in the body of the very sexy billy dee williams. it is easy to compare them to crawford and gable. the banter, his moustache and her wild and crazy clothes make the comparison that much easier.

not to mention, ... Read More

I expected nothing from this, given the dvd's cheap cover. It turned out to be a great performance by Lange and Jones, with her portraying a bipolar Army wife in the early 60s. The kids are great actors, too. Smart script. Nice pacing. Not too long. You can't go wrong.

VHS : Tom Jones (1963)
This movie is such a great example of use of humor in a fictional biography. ("Little Big Man" would be another) Tom, played by Albert Finney starts his life under dire circumstances and goes from one predicament to another. We fear for his life many times. Most of the Action occurs in the 1700s and we get to see the traumas of people living with parasites, being arrested for minor offenses and punished without benefit of fair trial or representation. Raw sewage and garbage fill the streets. It was a time when getting through each day was a hair-raising adventure for most people of a certain socio-economic strata. Tom loves the ladies and is hoplessly addicted to their attentions, which causes him even more problems with irate husbands, boyfriends and angry family members. Somehow he survives it all and usually lands on his feet. ... Read More
