VHS : Dracula: Prince of Darkness (Ws)
Vampires & More! 20 Movie Pack
Dracula, prince of darkness was directed by Terence Fisher, who had guided Christopher Lee through his first performance as the blood-thirsty count. Yhis film was the first NOT to feature Dracula's nemesis Van Helsing(played by Peter Cushing). Instead vamoire-fighting expertise was supplied by Andrew Kier in the role of Father Shandor. Like Van Helsing, Shandor despises blind superstition, but recognizes the forces of evil and respects their power. Dracula, Prince of Darkness, is in many ways a different sort of film from Hammer's, Horror of Dracula. Rather than jumping right into the expected vampiric activities, this film, takes its time introducing and developing its new characters before the revival of Dracula. Along with Shandor, the film's featured ... Read More

VHS : Hound of Baskervilles (1959)
I typically like the films from the Hammer Production. The 1959 version of The Hound of the Baskervilles is one of my favourite. Christoher Lee, whom I like very much, is simply superb in this film. Peter Cushing and Andre Morell are also excellent. The setting, the atmosphere and the whole feeling of the story are beautifully rendered. I highly recommand this DVD to others. For those who like this genre of films, it is a good one to add to one's collection.

VHS : Brides of Dracula
Brides of Dracula was the first of Hammer's many sequels to their breakthrough hit, and it's not just the best of the series but one of their very best pictures. There's no Christopher Lee this time round - in fact, there's no Dracula at all - but there's a lot of imagination at play here in a beautifully plotted story that sees Peter Cushing's Van Helsing coming up against David Peel's Baron Meinster, a follower of Dracula's vampire cult, after Yvonne Monlaur's schoolteacher ill-advisedly releases him from the shackles his not-as-mad-as-she-looks mother keeps him in.

There's a lot going on beneath the stylish surface here - a psychiatrist could probably have a field day with the curious relationship between Peel and Martita Hunt ("We pray for death, both of us. At least, I hope he prays"), not to ... Read More

VHS : Phantom of the Opera (1962)
I viewed three versions(1925, 1962 and 2004) of "The Phantom of the Opera" and enjoyed the ones made in 1962 and in 2004. I love the story of the 1962 version;the phantom is proved to be a respected music professor, a victim also a hero(by saving Christine's life) and people find out who is the actual "monster". Its stage is taken place in London Opera House instead of Paris.

I saw this movie when I was 16 years old and I never forgot it. I went back to the theatre several times because I enjoyed it so much. When I was older, I rented the movie to see if it was as really as good as I recalled it to be. I was just as impressed with it when I was 30 as I was when I was 16. I can still say(and I am 59 years old) tthis was the best horror film I ever saw and definitely the one I thought was most memorable in my life. It was all due to the fantastic color and acting. I have seen other movies with Oliver Reed and Yvonne Romain and I can say that they were my favorites in the horror film industry. Oliver Reed in anything was fun to watch.

VHS : Devil Rides Out (Ws)
Another fiendish tale with Christopher Lee at the helm. Set in turn of the century London this time, Lee's character must save 2 people from the vile clutches of a Devil worshiping cult. Complete with somewhat acurate, although spotty references to actual old world paganism, (how would I know that?) smoke and fire, candles and symbols, there's even a cameo appearance from the Dark One himself! Gotta love it! This film was a scary good time, although I think the ending was a little thin-- left me a little wanting, but classic stuff nonetheless. I've always said these late 60's Hammer films are in a brilliant class by themselves. You know if it stars Lee, Cushing, or Price, you've already got a winner.

VHS : Horror of Dracula
"Horror of Dracula" may not be a faithful adaptation of Bram Stoker's classic Gothic vampire tale, in fact far from it, but it is a fine take of Stoker's novel. In this version, Jonathan Harker goes to Dracula's castle at the beginning under the guise of a librarian, but he actually knows what Dracula is and his purpose is to destroy him. Unfortunately, he is killed by Dracula and the vampire goes to London to prey upon Harker's fiancee, Lucy Holmwood [yes, they changed the names too], and later on Mina Holmwood, Lucy's sister-in-law. It is left to Van Helsing [Peter Cushing] and Arthur Holmwood [Lucy's brother and Mina's husband] to destroy the monster.

Christopher Lee, in his first portrayal of the evil Count Dracula, may not have much screen time, but he makes the most of the limited time he does have. His Count ... Read More

VHS : The Gorgon
The Gorgon started out with a fascinating premise: An American scientist, determined to find the answer to osteoporosis, force-feeds residents of a Los Angeles retirement home massive quantities of calcium the way French farmers force-feed corn mash to geese. To the scientist's frustration, the residents turn to stone before he can properly record his experiments. Instead of the Nobel Award for medicine, late one stormy night he receives a lethal injection at a state prison while screaming that his intentions were misunderstood.

When financing fell through, the producers kept the cast and the plaster statues of men and women and hurriedly rewrote the screenplay to appeal to a wider audience. Now, deep in Transylvania in the village of Vandorf, near the forbidding Castle Borski, villagers still turn to stone. The instruments ... Read More

VHS : Island of Terror
Neat little monster flick even if it did miss the Fifties by a few years. Good locations and color photography (filmed in 1:85 ratio) adds to the effect and the monsters are adequate for a film of this type.

Beware that the UK DVD release has the 'hand amputation/blood squirting scene' completely edited out, but I do hear that the German DVD release has the scene still fully intact.

All in all, a fun fifties style 'monster on the loose/trapped on an island' story with a tinge of British flavor which always adds some intelligence to these type of sci-fi flicks.

VHS : Curse of Frankenstein
Although "Curse Of Frankenstein" was technically not the first of Hammer's horror movies ("The Mystery Of The Marie Celeste", from 1935 {and starring Bela Lugosi}, gets that honor) it was their first in a couple decades and it was the one that really launched Hammer Horror as a force. It came out in 1957, at the beginning of a great burgeoning of horror, and it set the tone for a lot of Hammer's movies that would come and make the studio the UK's most signifigant horror player for years. So it has great historical signifigance, but how does it rate based on its own merits? A mixed grade, actually.

The story is familiar: that of Victor Frankenstein attempting - and ultimately succeeding - to create life by stitching together pieces of the recently deceased and then using electricity hoping to spark reanimation. And, in familiar ... Read More
