VHS : Fortress
1/2 Riddick because a husband and wife are sentenced to a prison 30 or so stories below surface (for having more than one kid). 1/2 Demolition Man becase of the "big brother" like atmosphere and the lame acting. I know, it sounds great! How could this movie not be a blockbuster? Well, Chris Lambert isn't exactly a great actor. This movie isn't exactly good. And, oh yeah, the plot sucks! But it's an enjoyable watch anyway. For some reason my left brain kept telling me "change the channel" but my right brain just couldn't do it. I wish I could give this movie 2 1/2 stars, because I didn't really like it...but I didn't dislike it either. Plus the fact that Lambert has a gunfight with a diesel truck at the end really adds something to the story. It may be worth watching on a movie channel, but ... Read More

VHS : Dolls (1987)
Dolls should not be taken too seriously, it was a cheesy but fun low budget 80's horror film directed by Stuart Gordon who previously made Re-animator and From Beyond. Now if you know how good those two classic horror films were then you'll probably enjoy this since Stuart brings the same level of enthusiasm and excitement to this picture, although it's not even at the same level as those two classics and the film had less gore and blood, some parts were kind of silly to. Dolls came out around the time in which killer doll movies were extremely popular it also appeared in 1987, one whole year before Child's Play and after that in 1989 the Puppet Master series from Full Moon films began and you could tell where those films got their inspiration from. Dolls is a worthy addition to this list of killer doll movies ... Read More

VHS : Re-Animator
Re-Animator is too creative and too well planned to really be a B-movie, but it goes to great lengths to cram every element of a cheesy exploitation film into one outrageous horror-comedy. Nudity, undead monstrosities, extreme gore, mad scientists and jump-scares creep around every scene, and the horrifying re-animated are perfectly presented with over-the-top blood effects and hilarious dialogue. It's one of the greatest of all B-movies, and a near perfect combination of humor and fright.

"I gave him life!" exclaims Dr. Herbert West (Jeffrey Combs) after bringing back to life the deceased body of esteemed Doctor Gruber. Like a cold and calculating Frankenstein, West has created a re-animating agent that can defeat brain death - but with startling consequences. After being kicked out of his independent ... Read More

It makes me crazy to see the stars listed for a movie or TV series are NOT the main characters. Amazon, apparently, has copied the actor list from www.imdb.com and so the main characters, who appear further on down the list, do not even appear after the title of the movie. A potential buyer of this DVD would be looking for the main characters not the bit players.

I have tried to move up the stars in a DVD's list of actors before but have been rejected. Sometimes, but not always, someone actually looks at what I am trying to do and fixes the problem. Example: On Tour of Duty, a female actress was in a few episodes of ONE season but she was the only name Amazon put for all 3 seasons instead of Terrence Knox, et al. Doesn't make sense. It was finally fixed.

By the way, I really like this movie ... Read More

VHS : From Beyond
Like a lot of people, I first saw "From Beyond" on home video in the late '80s, when I was still in high school. Needless to say, its a movie that makes an impression. Its taken years and years for this film to finally be released legitimately on DVD, and after very recently watching it again for the first time in ages, that original impression has not changed - "From Beyond" is one of the most delightfully gross, perverse and flat out weird horror movies ever made. Sprouting from the kernal of an H.P. Lovecraft short story, Stuart Gordon really takes the film into some very weird and uncomfortable places (no, not the backseat of a Volkswagon), combining physics, psychology, and sexuality into an icky, slimy, grotesque tale that harkens back to and embodies the original source material. How much fun you have watching "From ... Read More

Yes!!!

This is everything a horror movie should be.

It has abominations that should not exist
and evil goings-on galore (and la gore).

Great creepy atmosphere,
lots of creepy creepies and one creepy plot
that crescendos to a mind-numbing conclusion
(watch it all if you can).

The ending is horrific and perversely happy
at the same time.

Lovecraft and Gordon, oh my!
If your looking for sick, twisted humor,
a la "Re-animator", forget about it.
This serious sick, twisted stuff.

Highly recommended for the horror fan.

VHS : Daughter of Darkness
It's not a quick, slick or even well-made horror movie. But it's well-cast, well-scored and well worth a small price if it should ever come out on dvd. This is a vampire movie devoid of all the pretentiousness and hit-me-over-the-head-with-your-vampire-sex-appeal monsters and is instead a Gothic story about a female stranger in a strange land who discovers that her Romanian roots includes vampires. And while someone in the makeup department had a little too much fun with the white foundation, the way the vamps get their fix (not through elongated fangs) makes them memorable. Other than the fact that the film has incredible atmosphere, I'm uncertain as to why "Daughter of Darkness" has such an alluring, low budget charm, but it does. Mia Sara does a good job playing the troubled American school teacher in search of her Romanian father, ... Read More
