Reminded me of the old black & white, "Who Done It". All stories were good, but "Dead-end for Delia" was my favorite. There is quite a twist to this story.

VHS : Kafka
"KAFKA" is one of those movies that was both negelected by the audience and the critics, and very unjustifiably so. What's exactly wrong with this picture? Is it because a lot of Very Heavy-Thinking Bookreaders claim that the real Franz Kafka is untouchable, and so: not-filmable, and there for, when this is done anyway, it must be condemned even before one single frame is actually seen?

But this is not about Mr. Real Kafka, it's about Mr. Fictitious Kafka, even one without Franz as a first name. This Mr. Fictitious Kafka writes about men transforming into giant insects, yes, and who works as a clerk in a insurance agency, yes, and who, at nightfall, sees a giant castle hoovering above the town in the distance, yes - but for all this, director Steven Soderbergh and screenplay writer ... VHS : Out of Sight (1998)
I love love love this movie. I saw it when it first came to video and I have watched it many times. This is perhaps the only instance where I prefer the movie to the book. The cast is magnificent. George and Jennifer have great chemistry and make their rather improbable romance seem somewhat plausible. Both characters are sexy, quirky, smart, flawed. This was the first time that I saw Catherine Keener, Don Cheadle and Steve Zahn in a movie. Nowadays they are some of my favorite actors and I always look out for their films. There are many other talented and well known actors in the film, and they blend in to make a great ensemble cast. Since seeing this movie I have always made a point of watching Soderbergh's films, however some are a bit too out there for me.

There are many ... Read More

VHS : Traffic
This movie is intense, complex and firmly grounded in reality. The topic is the drug traffic between the United States and Mexico and it follows three interconnected yet somewhat distinct plotlines.
One is set in suburban, affluent Ohio. Michael Douglas plays a judge who has just been nominated by the President of the United States to be the drug czar. Unknown to him, his sixteen-year-old daughter is a heavy user, regularly attending drug parties with her equally affluent friends. Although her mother knows that she is a user, she does not tell her husband, rationalizing it based on the fact that she also used drugs when she was young. As the Douglas character goes to Washington D. C. and walks the halls of power and then goes out into the field to learn more, the daughter's usage spirals out ... Read More

The thing is, I should have known this was going to happen, and in a way I did. I mean, I've been vocal about not getting into `Ocean's Eleven' and I just had this horrible feeling that this movie was going to be just as bad. I never imagined that it would be worse, but `just as bad', yes.

The whole concept behind the original film was taking a bunch of highly recognizable stars and throw them into a fast paced (albeit brainless) caper of a film where they got to be funny (sort of) and interact on a very personal level with one another, hopefully to engage the audience and make a lot of money. The problem was that not one of the actors could live up to their own hype. George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts...all actors who are genuinely charming and interesting and engaging, yet together ... Read More

VHS : Limey
After watching "The Limey" I was in awe of what I had beheld. This movie was dynamic and mute simultaneously. The genre of this film is a neo-noir, in other words a modern version of those crime/mysteries films made back in the golden days of cinema. These old school movies were black and white, "noir" is French for "black", hence the term film noir.

A thousand apologies for the deviation on my cinema history lesson, I will return to the review at hand. I have to say that I am on the fence with Steve Soderbergh's work. Some of his movies are great; I loved the remake of Solaris in 2002, "Out of Sight" and "Traffic". Consequently, I hated all of the "Ocean" films and "Full Frontal". So I wasn't sure what to except from "The Limey". In the end, I feel Soderbergh hit the nail on the head. The acting, editing, ... Read More

I enjoy true story movies, and I thought Julia Roberts does an excellent job portraying Erin Brocavich, as well as the great supporting cast with her. Kept my interest and was very compelling.

VHS : Solaris (2002)
"Solaris" is a very good adaptation of the famous Stanislaw Lem novel by the always interesting Steven Soderbergh. The film, while falling into the conventional genre of science fiction, is really more about human interactions and emotions: in other words, it's really a love story. Soderbergh is a very creative man, and I appreciated his approach to the subject matter: technology is ever-present in the film, but is never actually the subject of the film.

George Clooney plays Dr. Chris Kelvin, a psychiatrist who is haunted by the death of Rheya, the one true love of his life. He is sent to a space station circling a planet-like object named Solaris to investigate strange happenings on the station and if possible to rescue the crew. What he finds are the remnants of a crew who are having severe emotional problems, and he soon discovers that the reason ... Read More
