First at all: you may argue the racism in movies have reached the saturation point, and may be you decide to pass down this offer. But let me tell you that this criterion may shadow the possibility to watch one of the most potent and admirable performances in years of an enviable cast.
Consider the Dennis Hopper's performance. I think Dennis has made through his career, six outstanding portraits: Hoosiers,The American friend,Blue Velvet, Black widow, True Romance and this one. Second argument Ed Harris as the implacable investigator is superb too. Third: Barbara Hershey makes a penetrating and brilliant acting as the sensitive wife of Hopper.
Finally, the script by itself: we have a crude and terrible drama in the forties: Hopper plays a role of a convinced racist (and facist too, ... Read More

This is a good solid movie with occasional 'gems in the rock', particularly the development of the loving relationship that slowly builds up between warden John Flinders ( James Caan) and the widow McVale (Rachel Ticotin), whose first husband had gone to the gallows, for murder.

The setting is Arizona Territory 1910, as the West was 'a changin,' and there is even an early scene of a motor car in this otherwise conventional western.

If you want sex scenes and plenty of foul language, then don't bother with this movie. However if you want to watch a good western with fine acting by Caan and Ticotin in particular, then this is worthwhile. Personally, I think the slow inter personal development between warden and widow makes this flick far more interesting than watching some ... Read More

This movie is one of my favorites...one which I shared with foster parents in my professional capacity as a social worker.

We see the inevitable pull between birth mother and adoptive mother, cheering for each even as the tug nears its conclusion.

One of the downsides of this movie is the abrupt separation between the adoptive mother and the child. In my social worker capacity, I was able to orchestrate a more gradual reunification.

However, this is a movie and the drama depends upon the gut-wrenching loss.

Well worth the time and tears.

Except for a small, slight logical extension to the end, this adaptation is completely faithful to the book. To keep it to a reasonable length, chunks of plot and exposition in the original book have been left out - for example, the entire back story about Mackey being a published author is deleted, so when he goes back to his writing and Martha interrupts him at his typewriter, anyone not familiar with the original book may be lost as to why he's typing and why he reacts so strongly to being interrupted.

The cast assembled is a dream - Debra Winger, Barbara Hershey, Gabriel Byrne, Laurie Metcalf, David Straithairn, Paul Dooley. Because they've had a chance to read the original novel, they have complete backstories, and fully inhabit their characters.

It's very morbid but this case fascinates me. I know it IS a true story. I remember seeing this movie when I was 12 for the first time, yes I said 12. Since then I've seen it at least 15 times and now I own it. I've also read the book about the case, Evidence of Love, and I own that also. The book is very close to the movie itself, surprisingly. At the time I first saw it, I wasn't able to look it up on the internet, but since then I've researched it and that is how I came across the book. If anyone wants to see the real people and the real "victim", you can go to the crime library online and just type in Betty Gore or just search her name and it will come up. There was also a Murder by the Book special recently on court, oops, I mean trutv. I would like to see more about this case and would very much like ... Read More

This is one of my all-time favorite movies. Great cast, great plot, great screenplay. Very funny, but not in the way other movies about marijuana are. Most "pot movies" are slapstick, but Home Grown is a true drama, with tasteful comedy thrown in for fun. I wish more film makers would make movies about subjects like marijuana, skateboarding, and snowboarding without having them resemble Dumb and Dumber.

Like yesterday, I remember that August of 1973 when the Wesley Parker case hit the news. For those of you who don't know or don't remember, the case dealt with Larry & Lucky Parker. They were a deeply religious family from a California town with four children ranging from age 1-1/2 years to 11. Their oldest, a son Wesley, was diabetic. While attending church as they always did on Sunday, the Parkers brought their son Wesley up to be faith healed by a visiting Pastor. And this is where things turned bad.

Believing their son to have been cured by God, Larry & Lucky withheld his insulin - and 3 days later Wesley died. Though we've heard of these cases before, it was what followed that made this one stand out: Larry & Lucky announced to a stunned world that Wesley would rise from the ... Read More

This film directed by Stephen Gyllenhaal is only interesting in that it presents two female protagonists, pre-empting his later preference for female actors, eg Barbara Hershey. There is enough rough housing - beatings, rape, fire, flood, rats, drugs, chase, guns - for action fans and the dramatic plot doesn't slow things down too much. However given that the main characters are female, screenwriter Michael Jacobs unfortunately subjects them both to extended humiliations.
The incident which sets Irene Cara and Tatum O'Neal on the lam is poorly if campily staged, a courtroom gunbattle where the police are exposed as clods, and the idea that they have no reason to run since they are not responsible for the gunfire is soon dubiously rationalised by the death of a pursuing policeman.
Jacobs idea of social ... Read More
