VHS : Guess Who's Coming to Dinner
Understand that I understand that this movie probably had a much deeper impact upon its release, and that my review may actually be harsher that it would be had I actually seen it in 1967 and not 2008, but also please understand that regardless of when a film was released, it is open to judgment based on its `aging' factor. That said; I don't think `Guess Who's Coming to Dinner' holds up.

The film tells the story of John Wade and Joey Drayton, an interracial couple who met in Hawaii. Joey belongs to an upper-class White family; her parents being liberalists. John came from simpler means, but he built a good profession for himself as a doctor and is well respected and admired. The only problem is he's Black. The couple has only known each other for a few days but they are in ... Read More

As if this makes me some sort of expert or celebrity, but, whoo-hoo, I come from the "real" town/parish where the events that inspired the play and later the movie actually took place. Filming "on location" in our town/parish was denied, of course. Still as the filming went forward (in another location as we know)and after the film's release the people of our parish were outraged that such sins would be exposed. The publication of the play drew similar, but easily as passionate a reaction. For such a long time the roots in our community ran deep and strong. The people worked hard and were pious. Loyalty and discretion were expected. They wrapped themselve in renunciation not only of their sins but of the world at large. The story as it unfolded in real life brought disgrace to a community, a church ... Read More

I saw On the Beach, as a young boy in 1959, and have never forgotten it, nor it's impacting, hard hitting, unforgettable images! Nobody really knew what to expect from the movie. The movie didn't upset me, but rather, caused me to better understand all that was going on in the world and with the Cold War. (It was a time where "air raid drills" were commonplace in my elementary school . . . all students, single file into the hallways, kneeling down against the wall, hands over head, elbows on the floor . . . and one of us assigned to open the classroom's windows . . . less resistance for the bomb's draft!!!)

I believe this movie was the first nationally seen "visual statement" about nuclear war. The movie is produced beautifully, with outstanding character portrayals by incredible actors. A beautiful, but profoundly ... Read More

This is an excellent adaption of a great American play, although a bit over-acted, especially by Fredric March. There is absolutely nothing subtle about his performance. I also found Gene Kelly's performance to be quite good. I think his character should be found to be just as annoying as March's, just as self-righteous in his own way. The ending of the movie is one of my favorites... with Drummond slapping the 2 books together as 1 when he walks out. That to me is the most important message of the movie, that science and religion can work together.

I enjoyed this movie as a kid, but watched it recently and found it to be bloated and dated and not all that funny. However, the final two minutes are one of the most profoundly spiritual moments in the history of cinema.

The lesson learned by Spencer Tracy's character, that life is inherently absurd and laughter is the best medicine for melancholy, is one that we can all benefit from. When sadness strikes, I watch the final two minutes several times in a row, and experience a healing catharsis.

This all sounds a little pompous and pretentious (even to me), but it is true nevertheless.

VHS : The Secret of Santa Vittoria
"Secret of Santa Vittoria" is a wonderfully flavorful comic drama whose major fault can be overlength which is apparent in the film's second half. Anthony Quinn, whose made a garden industry out of playing earthy peasant types(I wasn't a big fan of Zorba), is totally winning as the town clown, Italo Bombolini, foisted into the position of mayor on the eve of the German occupation in the waning days of World War II. The town's lifeblood is it's wine supply and the German's intentions are to abscond with it and it's up to the fool Bombolini to outsmart the master race. Hardy Kruger is equally fine as a German officer torn by gentility and his desire not to look foolish in front of these "barbarians". Anna Magnani shines as Bombolini's hard-bitten long-suffering spouse. The film looks great and you get a real sense of community here. A real ... Read More

VHS : Ship of Fools (B&W)
This is a great little obscure film--full of wonderful character actors, a stellar performance by Michael Dunn, little person. If you have wondered about Vivien Leigh as Scarlet O'Hara, well this proves that the lady could truly act, was a master at her craft. Lee Marvin is great, as always, though this is an unusual role for him to play. The movie is basically about the characters--the people on the ship, their internal dramas that are breaking to the surface. Giant results from a low budget. It CAN be done.

In this 1970 film written by Eric Segal(Love Story).Anthony Quinn portrays a liberal thinking professor who becomes College President after the former College Professor is bounced out by the student activists. a peaceful Quinn is then put at odds by those same activists when they threaten to use violence on their own campus for their own gains. This is an excellent College Campus thriller that was so reminscent of that period in the late 60's and early 70's!!
