VHS : Follow the Sun: The Ben Hogan Story
Being a golfer and a fan of the sport for many years, I was very interested in seeing this, which I did when the VHS first came out. Later, I saw it again because of the same reason plus I usually find Glenn Ford's films entertaining.

Well, the story moves well, it didn't bore me, but I did have problems with the accuracy of it and the general theme of the film, telling us that Hogan really was a nice guy who cared lot about what the public thought. From every account I have read, and from a couple of people who met him or knew him, that was not true. The fact is that he was a mean SOB and remained that way most of his life. This movie looks like it was made by his press agent. It's ridiculous and ruins what otherwise is an inspiring story.

No one can deny Hogan's ... Read More

Okay, Sonia Henie may not be the best actress ever, but I think she does a plenty adequate job here. After all, she's playing a midwest school teacher who is caught unawares that she has been entered into a nation-wide talent search for "The Girl of the North". Given this is the role she's playing, the role of a school teacher who is suddenly thrust into the limelight, what kind of acting experience do you need? I felt her portrayal was realistic! I mean, one day you're a school teacher, the next day, your acting in movies? Of course you are going to be awkward, not to mention scared out of your wits.

Ty was just outstanding. He was funny, charming, and a bit of Cyrnao De Bergerac thrown in (when he's writing love songs for the other guy to sing to the girl who he loves). ... Read More

VHS : Thin Ice
After One in a Million 1936, Sonja Henie was fast becoming a Hollywood star in the front rank. In THIN ICE she is teamed with her then-boyfriend Tyrone Power and the chemistry is explosive... It`s a Cinderella-story, but given the full treatment by 20th Century-Fox - it`s almost like an MGM extravaganza :-)

The skating is good and Joan Davis as a comedy relief is a winner. As a matter of fact I can`t understand the fuzz they make about the Astaire&Rogers musicals over at RKO... I much more prefer the Sonja Henie`s at 20th Century-Fox... They are never OVERLONG and never outstays their welcome:-)

The affair with Power never ended in marriage; he was bisexual and Sonja found out... When he married French Annabella she was reportedly deeply hurt though they remained friends up until Power ... Read More

VHS : One in a Million
I'm not really that big a fan of Sonja Henie's skating. Rather, it's her fresh-faced screen presence which I find so engaging. Sonja Henie was a Norwegian skating darling who won the figure skating gold medal in the 1928, 1932, and 1936 Olympics. In 1936, she successfully transitioned from skating into film acting with the delightful ONE IN A MILLION. Off the top of my head, the only other woman athlete who managed to finagle her sports stardom into a lucrative film career is gorgeous swimmer Esther Williams (although I could do without her swimming gimmicks as well). ONE IN A MILLION was only one of the many musical comedies which bombarded Hollywood in this era, but it stood out not only because of Sonja Henie's fine debut, but because of the acting of the rest of the cast, the lighthearted storyline, the catchy ... 6.You'll Never Get Rich starring: Fred Astaire, Rita Hayworth, Robert Benchley, John Hubbard, Osa Massen

VHS : You'll Never Get Rich
Rita Hayworth was born to be a dancer with the likes of Fred Astaire & Gene Kelly. It's a wonder that Ginger Rogers was ever paired with Astaire since Astaire claimed that Hayworth was the best dancer he'd been paired with. Certainly Hayworth was a better box office draw as well. Appearance wise, Hayworth was the "Love Goddess." Dance wise, Rita Hayworth is a marvel to watch; stop the film, rewind & repeat. For a lady who was so soft spoken, shy, family-centered & yet, business strong, Hayworth seems to unleash raw energy on every dance floor she's ever been filmed. Even though "Gilda" became her signature claim to fame film, this one reveals a much more mature dancer who certainly gave Astaire the most talented, beautiful match he ever had on screen~

I expected more from a B. Hope movie, but this one delivers a lot less. Fans of Bob will be disapointed.

Hope fans will have fun watching watching Bob and beautiful Madeleine Carroll navigate through this delightful romp about secret flight plans hidden in a gold scorpion pin. Hope gets off some good one-liners and there is even an amusing cameo from Bing. A better than usual screenplay by Don Hartman and Frank Butler, based on a story by Melvin Frank and Norman Panama, give Bob and gorgeous Madeleine plenty to do yet still enough time to fall in love.

Madeleine is Karen Bentley, a British agent trying to deliver top secret flight plans that German agents want to get their hands on at any cost. The plans are in code in a gold scorpion pin. When her partner is killed by enemy agents aboard the S.S. Aleria, the chase is on. Another British agent is taken down, this one a female, murdered because they thought she was Karen. She ... VHS : The Princess and the Pirate
Bob Hope is his charming-best in THE PRINCESS AND THE PIRATE (1944), a fun Technicolor musical comedy with lots of great sight gags for Hope and company, plus a romantic Virginia Mayo in lush period dress.

Set during the 17th century, Bob Hope is Sylvester "the Great", a none-too-successful entertainer, who must rescue Margaret (Virginia Mayo), a princess traveling incognito, when their ship is hijacked by notorious pirate The Hook (Victor McLaglen) and his men. Sylvester and Margaret escape the ship only to be swept away into another hilarious confrontation, this time with money-hungry Featherhead (Walter Slezak), a nobleman who holds Margaret for ransom.

Bob Hope and Virginia Mayo are an irresistible musical comedy team in THE PRINCESS AND THE PIRATE, which also features fun roles for Maude Eburne, Walter Brennan, ... Read More

This movie isn't terribly accurate as to actual Boot Camp life, but it was filmed at Great Lakes Naval Station about 10 years before I was stationed there in 1962-3. The barracks, the furnishings, everything in the background shots look just the way they did when I was there. I thoroughly enjoy this movie everytime I watch it just for the memories!
