This British New Wave film is in the social comment style of A Taste of Honey and A Kind of Loving and it is one of the best of these films. The relationship between the two mates in the story has been misunderstood since gay liberation and so therefore has the film. The film is about the disillusionment of youth in the modern world. The story has two young mates enjoying the freedom of the roads on their motorbikes while facing having to grow up in the modern adult world. One of them gets married and finds himself entangled in the responsibilities of marriage, while the other (Dudley Sutton's character) is determined to avoid this fate and keep his motorbike and the freedom of the roads, so he has nothing to do with girls. However at the end of the film, when the two mates finally part ... Read More

1966. An American spaghetti western directed by a Canadian director. Remember the arm wrestling between Marlon Brando and John Saxon with two scorpions as spectators ? It was in THE APPALOOSA. You can now find a superb zone 2 DVD of this movie, in a pristine copy, at Amazon.fr.

I have always adored Billie Holiday since I was a kid. She is, to me, the greatest female jazz singer in history. I was about 11 when I first saw this movie and I was naturally excited when I learned that there was a movie about Billie holiday's life I was completely horrified and disappointed with this movie, Diana's acting, and the singing. I wanted to hear Billie's actual voice with the music, or at least someone who had a similar vocal quality to Billie. Nothing personal to Diana, I also like Diana's singing and some of the other movies that she had played in. I just don't think this was a good choice for her to star in. I felt that they could have chosen someone who looked and sang at least a little similar to Billie. But, I see the director didn't care about that either, instead choosing someone who ... Read More

VHS : Taking of Beverly Hills / Movie
"The Taking of Beverly Hills" is an action-packed thrill ride of a movie! I know, because the very first time I saw it, it was sooooooo good that I just had to watch it again. And each time I watch "Beverly Hills", it gets better and better throughout. I had to give credit to Ken Wahl on the lead performance as a quarterback football player. To me, whenever I see this movie, it kind of asks me this question..."How can one man go through an entire night of running from the bad guys that are robbing the city of Beverly Hills as if this is some kind of real life-or-death football game all of a sudden?" Well, I don't have the answer to that one just yet. But anyway, to anyone on this website, DO NOT MISS THIS FILM!!!

I can't understand why this film has been overlooked for so long. You've got Sidney J. Furie directing Sinatra and a solid supporting cast with a good storyline. Playing somewhat out of character as a fallguy trying to discover what's going on, Sinatra does an extremely credible job of portraying Sam Laker. Peter Vaughan, playing the "instigator" Slattery, is so good that I wanted to do away with him myself. It was great to see Nadia Gray again in a small but effective role. The only complaint is that it seems as though the entire film was dubbed in afterwards. There's a great and very satisfying finale that gives you reason to project what might happen next. This film deserves to be seen and I highly recommend it.

Maurice Micklewhite (Michael Caine) has always been one of my favorite actors. I saw this 007 Era movie when it was first released and watched it again more recently. It is a FAB movie. It has lost nothing over time and can even be more appreciated today. Caine is very magnetic as the oh so sexy but slightly nerdy instrument of espionage. A great, suspenseful movie that is effective without all the 007 gimmicks.

VHS : Devil Doll
The '64 black and white horror film 'Devil Doll' is a decidedly unnerving feature that has the feel of an extended episode of the old television series 'The Twilight Zone.' The camera work is expertly done adding to an surreal feel to the film already established by the hypnotic voice of magician, sorcerer Bryant Haliday (the Great Vorelli) and his scary little possessed dummy Hugo. The storyline is also well conceived, highly original for the time and will hold your attention from beginning to end.

One final accolade for this obsure all but forgotten film is the presence of the irresistible and exotic looking Yvonne Romain. She is definitely one of the most beautiful actresses of the sixties, why some intelligent producer or director didn't take her under his wing and make her an international star is a mystery ...
