VHS : Barretts of Wimpole Street (1934)
This beautiful production from the early 1930's of a dark shadow hanging over the promise of glorious love and happiness is perhaps Norma Shearer's lovliest performance. The romance between poets Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett was filmed with a class and meticulous care only MGM could muster. Under Sidney Franklin's direction, William Daniels' photography, and the period flourish provided by Cedric Gibbons, this became one of the greatest romantic dramas ever to be filmed.

Shearer loses her modern slinky charm and projects a luminous class as Elizabeth Barrett, a shining soul living with illness in a house strangled of love by her cruel and repressed father, played to horrible perfection by Charles Laughton. Her lifeline is her continuing correspondence with fellow poet ... Read More

VHS : Private Lives
Norma Shearer is superb in this classic, hilarious, devastatingly honest film from the brilliant Noel Coward play. Norma's roots in silent film is read on her face in an exquisite moment early in the scenario, in which she slowly, agonizingly, then tenderly, then with horror, realizes that she and her new husband are located in a hotel suite next door to her ex, and his new bride. The play of emotions on Shearer's face, from shock, to dread, to agonized pain, then tender warmth and remorse, and back to horror and panic about what she must next do, is worthy of an Oscar, in and of itself. This film made me worship Norma Shearer as one of the greatest acting talents, ever. And the play itself is so warm, so realistic, so tender, so honest about the crazed reality of love. The screaming fight scenes ... Read More

This has always been one of my favorites westerns, although I never went to the trouble of getting a DVD version, until it came up on my Amazon recommendation list. I ordered it right away, and received the usual good Amazon service, and quick, free shipping, and have not been disappointed. Gregory Peck is one of best actors, and makes the movie, playing the bad guy this time, instead of his usual hero role. I can personally recommend this movie, going against a number of the negative reviews that are posted here.

VHS : Smilin Through (1932)
this is one of my very favorite movies! The whole cast is wonderful! Since everyone has already raved about Norma and Frederick's performances, I'm going to rave about Leslie's. There is a scene, in the flashback, where we see the night before the fatal wedding. John and Moonyean sneak away and have a lighthearted, romantic conversation. The dialogue may sound corny coming out of someone else's mouths ( "wouldnt it be wonderful if every time I opened my eyes, you were there?" or "after tonight, there'll be no more partings, no more goodbyes, will there my sweet?") but coming from Leslie Howard and Norma Shearer's mouths, we dont cringe. In fact, we all sincerely go "AW!" he is so adorable in that scene, that when Moonyean is shot, and he is holding her and we see the depths of despair and anguish in his eyes, our heart ... VHS : The Guardsman (1931)
If you've never seen this film, it's worth searching for, but it would be great if the studio would release a DVD version, with perhaps some nice special features. It's hard to imagine there might be many persons left who had the thrill of seeing Lunt and Fontanne in their youth, but there are theatre biographers and other experts who could contribute some valuable commentary. Preserving these two for future generations is more than an historical interest. Their performances are peerless, and a real treasure.

slightly offensive. It's not entirely fair to hold a movie made in 1937 to our standards, but MGM could have showed some courage had they employed Chinese actors for Chinese parts. It's the same type of subtle racism of the day when native Americans in movies were played by whites. It is disrespectful at least. That said the photgraphy is awesome. There's just something about a locust plague in black & white. An excellant but definite fictional Hollywood movie. The life of a peasant farmer Wang Lang. Paul Muni did as well as anyone could have. Nothing special there.
His marriage to slave O-Lan is the best argument for arranged marriage I ever seen. Luise Rainer was a bit underwhelming. Their life is followed from poverty, sucess, starvation, wealth, moral weakness (his) & plague with war thrown in. That ... Read More

VHS : Wild Orchids (Silent)
The Greta Garbo of the silent era is a fascinating creature to watch on screen in so many ways. Often during the late 20's playing a vamp, femme fatale, or adulterious wife her work in this early period makes a most interesting contrast to her later roles as the tragedy queen of MGM's glossy 1930's historical pieces and romantic melodramas. "Wild Orchids", coming from 1929 is what is called a "transitional talkie", meaning that it was one of the very last silent films produced and had sound effects incorporated into the sound track which makes for interesting viewing if only to witness first hand this very brief interlude in movie making before sound came fully in. Indeed Garbo was deliberately held back from talkies by MGM because of fears of what her accent would do to her loyal public's perception of her. "Wild Orchids", really can ... Read More

VHS : Dark Angel (1934)
Although the 1935 version of THE DARK ANGEL was a remake of an earlier silent film, it too seems to have disappeared into obscurity--and what a shame! This movie will not appeal to fans of the current brand of Hollywood "love stories", where the hero and heroine (or same sex couples in some cases) slip easily into bed together after only just meeting, several car chases and shoot-outs ensue, and the plots remind you of the last Meg Ryan film you saw because they are all the same--and they are filmed in color. THE DARK ANGEL is from an entirely different era of film making: the glorious 1930s. A time when movies, particularly love stories, depended on a good script and good acting to keep the viewer watching, and if successful in both these areas, the viewer won't notice that the movie is in black and white. And what a wonderful job they ... Read More
