VHS : Brother Cadfael Series 1 Box Set: The Sanctuary Sparrow, One Corpse Too Many, Monk's Hood and The Leper of St. Giles
These are the best of the series. It may be your introduction to the books or a chance to see the stories you've loved come alive.
These are the closest to the books (the characters and stories suffer some distortions) and perfectly cast and acted.

VHS : Brother Cadfael Series 2 Box Set: The Devil's Novice,St. Peter's Fair and The Virgin in the Ice
If you are a fan of the film " The Name of the Rose", you will love Brother Cadfael

The monk is part Father Brown with Sherlock Holmes. He solves crimes the medievel way and the way he does it will intrigue mystery lovers everywhere.

Derek Jacobi bring an aire of class to Cadfael. He brings the character off the page of the Peter's novels with ease

I recieved this as a very early Christmas gift from a friend going to Europe for a few months, thanks Dan for the gift..it is a great addition to my DVD Mystery library and it will fit in any of yours.

Also all disks have Jacobi audio commaries on all three shows in this collection..worth it for that alone

Yep too many people had access to the meal so it is up to Cadfael (Derek Jacobi) to figure out who did it and why. If you have a pre3ty good idea you are wrong.

Of occurs to add a little spice the toe story when Cadfael discovers a little something of his past that makes it imperative he find the answer.

A marriage of convenience is to take place between Baron Huon De Domville and the orphaned Iveta De Masssard. The Barron wants more land. Iveta on the other hand is really in love with another.

As the baron and Iveta are traveling by some lepers the baron whips them and Iveta tosses money. We pretty much can guess what is going to happen to the baron. On the eve of the wedding, the Barron mysteriously rides off alone into the night, and that's the last time he's seen alive. Cadfael sets out to investigate his disappearance. In the process we get to revisit Cadfael's past and maybe an old friend.

Naturally the description of this film is simplified and for readers of Ellis Peters' works the film is simplified from the story.
You have to take your hat off to Creeping Gromwell for helping Cadfael solve the mystery. ... Read More

We've enjoyed most of the Cadfael episodes, but were not expecting the "atmosphere" that the director created in this episode. The Welsh characters were grubbier, which was great, but the use of color was amazing. In particular the lead actress was very engaging, and colors were used to highlight her presence. Very impressive staging!

Screenwriter Christopher Russell also adapted A MORBID TASTE FOR BONES and THE ROSE RENT. Here Russell has left the main framework of the story intact, but the characterization has been watered down, and as in the above named adaptations potential motives of passion are blown out of proportion. Little changes have been made in many background details, such as renaming several characters and compressing/combining scenes (easier on the budget and on short attention spans, but oversimplifying the story). Since the characters and the subtleties of their relationships are the key to the novel's quality, the fact that the actual events of the story have been faithfully adapted isn't enough to carry the adaptation for me.

Rather than trimming the beginning of the story, Russell has added material, starting with Peter Clemence's arrival at "Ashby Manor" (Aspley ... Read More

VHS : Brother Cadfael: The Rose Rent
The Rose rent is a great mystery and in the course of being solved leads people to evaluate what has worth in life. A young widow must now face the fact that she may have killed her husband and also plan the rest of her life.

I was going to print the quote from the back cover; yet as usual the person who wrote the blurb could not have seen the film or have read the book.

Of course people die and Brother Cadfile uses forensics to determine who the murderer/s are and the motive/s. You get more then sufficient clues on the way.

My favorite quote is in the morning as they are ringing the morning bell, someone asks Cadfile, "Are you awake?" and Cadfile staggering "No. But I am out of bed."
