VHS : A Night at the Opera
When the Marx Brothers came to MGM in 1935, boy wonder producer Irving Thalberg had the good commercial sense to package them in a genuine musical comedy. Their anarchic comedy may have been slightly better served in some earlier Paramount comedies but never were they better showcased than here, their most popular film because of the balance of entertainment on offer and the quality of the production values provided by MGM, the Rolls Royce of film studios at the time.

For those who know the Marx Brothers, there is little to say. Furthermore, there are lots of excellent Amazon reviews which can fill you in. For those younger people who may not know the team, do yourself a favour and watch this film. You may baulk at the love interest sub plot and the music but don't miss some ... Read More

VHS : A Day at the Races
When the Marx Brothers came to MGM in 1935, boy wonder producer Irving Thalberg had the good commercial sense to package them in a genuine musical comedy which widened their box office appeal enormously although it detracted from the pure gold of their earlier anarchic Paramount comedies.

"A Day at the Races" followed the formula of the hugely successful "A Night at the Opera", but it was was the beginning of the end of their golden period. The problem is simply that while the boys are very good, there is just not enough of them and in inverse proportion, a dumb love story with the charming Allan Jones and the equally charming but sappy Maureen O'Sullivan. Also, there is a notable softening of their characters, particularly Harpo and that diminishes them.

The film also ... Read More

If baseball is so symbolic of America that it becomes a metaphor for how we like to think we are or can be, then films that celebrate the immortals of baseball can easily tap into a well of mythic consciousness that resonates with each generation that watches them. In THE STRATTON STORY, director Sam Wood recreates a celluloid vision of grass roots America that audiences could well remember from PRIDE OF THE YANKEES. James Stewart as Monty Stratton has never been better as the small town pitcher who goes from the minors to the majors only to discover that the biggest obstacle of all is not the fearsome sluggers of Murderers Row but rather the difference between success and failure is the ability to rise above personal misfortune by sheer effort of will.

Director Wood splits screen time between ... Read More

VHS : Command Decision
One of the earliest attempts to show the politics and terrible strain on a leader's conscience as America debates the effectiveness of daylight bombing. Great dialogue, made more intense by Clark Gable, Walter Pidgeon, and Brian Donleavy. Not much in the way of plane shots.....I suggest Twelve O'Clock High for more of that, and we do not see the leaders crack as they do in Twelve O'Clock High. Not much in the way of extras.

I'm not a fan of war films. There is too much shooting for me in this and I wondered if Hemingway had a love affair with guns. It's very long and some of the sets look really fake. Sometimes I lost track of the characters.

However I had to give it five stars! Why, after all these criticisms? One, for the theme. Although these specific characters were fictional, they were based on real people who gave their lives fighting for their principles. Not the least of these heroes and heroines was an American who gave up his academic career, as did a lot of others, to go to Spain to help the locals fight fascism. This is a story worth telling.

Secondly, the cast is perfect! It's said that Hemingway personally selected Cooper and Bergman and they are wonderful. Gary Cooper was such a special man, ... Read More

VHS : Cat & The Fiddle
The Cat and the Fiddle is the story of a musical couple. They meet when Victor (Ramon Novarro) slips into a taxi being used by Shirley (Jeanette MacDonald). Although she rejects him at first, the two become live-in companions, both struggling to achieve fame as composers. When her song becomes a hit, Victor feels the itch to succeed even more. Shirley is aware of this feeling and plans to leave the city to accompany Victor to the town where they met, hoping to spark inspiration. However, he knows that this will jeopardize her career, so he stages a change of heart and leaves her to compose an operetta.

Novarro is slightly creepy in his love scenes as he seems more like an obsessive stalker than an amorous man. His voice is not great, but he is certainly passionate and attractive. MacDonald has a soft, operatic voice ... Read More
