VHS : A Night to Remember: The Sinking of the Titanic
There's not much more to be said about this, the *definitive* Titanic movie.

But be careful about the DVD. Mine "rotted", and is now unplayable. Search the Web - it seems to be a common problem. Criterion replaces any unplayable copies free of charge. Just be sure to check this disc every now and then - it's a gem.

VHS : Dr Jekyll & Sister Hyde
Was this the best theatrical version of Jack the Ripper I've ever seen? Or was it the best theatrical version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde? All I know is that Hammer Film Productions produced another winner with "Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde." According to this tale of gothic horror, the infamous Jack the Ripper was actually Dr. Jekyll.

Dr. Jekyll is working hard to find the elixir of eternal life. Female hormones seem to be the solution. At first he acquires fresh corpses of young women from two unscrupulous grave robbers. Unfortunately, when the grave robbers are brought to justice, the good doctor must begin killing prostitutes in order to acquire the female hormones.

Dr. Jekyll drinks the elixir which has an unexpected side effect. He turns into ... Read More

VHS : The Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires
An extravagant claim but one I'm gonna endeavor to back up.
'Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires' is the last horror picture Peter Cushing made for Hammer, and is magnificent. He plays Van Helsing, (yes.. honest!)and to his eternal credit he looks believably close to tears every time he utters an emotionally-charged line like "In Europe it is the crucifix, in Asia; the image of the Lord Buddha".
I adore Peter Cushing anyway, and to see him in any film is good for me, but to see him in a work of this magnitude and gravitas is a real treat. He must be lying there now, thinking about his 50-odd year career, each performance building up to "My knowledge is restricted to the Western Hemisphere". Strangely, there's not much in his autobiography about 'LOT7GV' which is unfathomable.

VHS : Scars of Dracula
The fans and critics are correct, "Scars of Dracula" is a departure from Hammer Production's Dracula series. It is definitely gorier and more violent than the others as though targeted for younger audiences who were craving more gore and violence in the early seventies. In "Scars of Dracula," Dracula appears more evil and diabolical. His violent outbursts are quite shocking. Perhaps he hasn't been getting enough sleep. That would explain the bloodshot eyes. Furthermore, Dracula always had a sense of class and breeding; in this film, he's a veritable brute.

I enjoyed "Scars of Dracula." Though I don't consider myself a gore hound, I do love a high body count. This movie promised an extremely high one but I was disappointed. It begins with a bang: The mass spilling of innocent blood ... Read More

Gently humourous and with the richest of Irish accents, this lovely, warm-hearted turn-of-the-century comedy-drama is perfect for anyone looking for quality family viewing.

This, the second series (which once again contains six 50-minute episodes), covers a period of approximately eight or nine years and sees the return of all the familiar characters from the first series (with the exception of Mrs. Knox, Flurry's grandmother). This is, I should just mention, a series that one ought to watch from the beginning (ie. from the first boxed set) as there is a definite air of continuity to the episodes.

If you enjoyed the first series, you'll enjoy this one just as much. Though there is a little more drama in a couple of the episodes (with a couple of potentially serious incidents occurring), the comedy is ... Read More

I had been waiting a long time to watch this film, and I'm a bit disappointed. The storyline is very weak and the premise for the entire film doesn't really work. While I enjoy campy, this is just too campy for its own good.

While some scenes were creepy enough, the entire film just didn't seem to be worthy of the praises it's receiving. I'd rather watch Mexican Gothic horror or outrageous B Horror films.

VHS : Quatermass & The Pit (Ws Spec)
"Quatermass and the Pit" is the most exciting science fiction/horror hybrid I've seen from Hammer Productions. The plot is intricate, exciting and thought provoking; it offers extremely unique theories of man's origin on earth.

Professor Quatermass (Andrew Keir of "Dracula: Prince of Darkness") is investigating what first appears to be an unexploded bomb found during the construction of a subway line. Upon further examination, he learns that it is an alien spacecraft that is over five million years old. The identity of its crewmembers is quite disturbing. Worse of all, the spacecraft appears to have a life of its own. Pandemonium breaks out in London as the spacecraft takes possession of men's bodies and souls, turning them into killing machines that can't be stopped.

I'm not going to review the film, since others have done an excellent job of that already. I will say that it is a classic horror comedy well worth watching. The main reason for this short review is to point out that the stand alone soundtrack included on the DVD, in a jukebox format where you can click on the song and listen to it, is flawed. The problem concerns the original LP used by Pathfinder Entertainment to record the tunes. All of the instrumentals, four tracks worth from the B side of the record, are full of pops and crackles. Now, wouldn't you have thought that the folks converting these tunes would take the time to clean them up? Took me forever to do it myself for a separate MP3 soundtrack. Seems they didn't bother to even listen to them after recording, otherwise a good sound editor would have taken the time to clear away the noise. Anyway, ... Read More
