VHS : Blood & Sand (1941)
"Blood and sand" is one of the most famous novels of Blasco IbaƱez, that somehow retakes the myth of Icarus about the story of the son of a famous bullfighter, from his impoverished ages of childhood to his unequalled fame as the best Spanish bull fighter, idolized and loved for many women.

His superb reaches a turning point when he was seduced by an alluring woman - Rita Hayworth-, although she is aware he `s a married man, and how this ethic deviation will lead him to a fatal disgrace, here you have the essential pivot of all tragedy according the Greek pattern, the violation or transgression of the rule will blind the humblest of men.

Tyrone Power as the disgraced bullfighter, Linda Darnell as his suffered wife and Hayworth as the "fatale femme" complete a narration ... Read More

This movie is a sad piece of cinema. I found it difficult to watch. The only reason I gave it two stars is the cast, but they can't save this film. The storyline is so then. They also seem to be taking bits from other musicals that were popular and meshing them all in to one. Also, Mickey Rooney is playing a 17 year old lovestruck high school graduate again! This entire film is unbelievable. There isn't a single song that catches the ear. Oh well, I guess this is one musical MGM got wrong.

VHS : Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde (1932)
Just as in "Les Miserables", Frederic March really was this young once. The avuncular actor of later films won't be found. Here March portrays the split personality of both a kindly, idealistic London physician and the raging maniac he creates in his lab. Dr. J was filmed in creepy black and white-that lost art. The special effects are truly shivery as the good Jekyll transforms into the evil Hyde before the viewer's very eyes. Director Mamoulian keeps the pace frantic as March morphs from Jekyll to Hyde and back. The female leads are central to the plot. Both Miriam Hopkins and Rose Hobart are superb. MH is the racy, "pre Code" bar girl who Jekyll befriends and Hyde abuses. An old "Variety" review claimed that Hopkins played her role with "a capital sense of comedy and coquetry". She certainly ... One of the best swashbuckling films ever made, I bought the b&w dvd when it first came out, then when I saw Fox had released a colorized edition, I decided to give it a chance. I was not disappointed. The colorization is excellent and it is like viewing an entirely new film. I've never really understood the complaints the critics have with colorizing some of these older films. If colorizing meant one could never watch the b&w version again then I'd certainly agree, but all colorizing does is allows you to see some of your favorite movies in a different perspective. And as the new 'Special Edition' includes both versions, what's the problem? Now if they would only release the colorized versions of the great Errol Flynn swashbucklers, and Ronald Colman's 'Prisoner of Zenda', my library would be complete.

VHS : Queen Christina
Garbo is Garbo here, and that's really all that needs to happen. She is splendid and it's worth sitting through this otherwise rather silly film to see her. Historically, it's not at all accurate but if you are more interestd in Hollywood glamour than reality, then this shouldn't bother you.

John Gilbert really does look awful, and it's very hard to imagine that anyone would fall instantly in love with him. But then it's even more difficult to believe that Garbo as Christina, dressed in man's clothes could convince anyone that she was a man. Maybe if they had removed her lipstick and eyeliner...but that's show business.

It's a great film for die hard Garbo fans who overlook all these flaws just to see her. Others, beware.

With the passing of Cyd Charisse last week at age 86, it's worth seeking out what is probably her finest work on celluloid. Granted as an actress, she was bland, and as a singer, she was dubbed (this time by the sonorous-sounding Carol Richards). But as a dancer, she was extraordinary. Along with Vera-Ellen, the ballet-trained Charisse was in the top echelon of the female dancers that MGM showcased during the studio's golden years of which this film is one of its final stops. The clearest evidence of this claim can be found in the title tune when she dances with beauty and precision elegantly changing from her drab street clothes into silk and satin. It's a remarkable number, no small feat since her co-star is Fred Astaire. Directed by early musical maven Rouben Mamoulian (Love Me Tonight) in what turned out to be his last film, the movie also ... Read More

VHS : Song of Songs
This was Dietrich's first Hollywood film without Josef Von Sternberg, so for film buffs, that alone is reason enough to buy the tape. Actually, the movie itself is worthy of a closer look, as Dietrich gives a very good performance in a sometimes slow-moving film.
Playing a peasant girl by the name of Lily, we see Dietrich move to the city upon the death of her father, to stay with her aunt in her aunt's bookstore. One day she meets in the store a young handsome artist(Brian Aherne), who is struggling with a sculptor's form of writer's block. She becomes his inspiration, and they soon fall in love. Eventually, Lily talks of marriage, and the young sculptor chooses a life of art over love, and leaves her. Lily then falls into the hands of the artist's benefactor,(lionel Atwill) who sees only a beautiful young woman he can mold like clay.
After ... Read More
