VHS : The Pallisers, Set 1
After Susan Hampshire had played Fleur Forsyte, Becky Sharp, and Lady Sarah Churchill for the great BBC miniseries of the late 60s and early 70s it might have seemed inevitable that she was called upon to play her greatest part, Lady Glencora M'Cluskie Palliser, when the BBC decided to adapt Trollope's six "Parliamentary" novels over the period of three years beginning in 1974. Oddly enough, as she explains in an interview extra on this DVD, the part was originally slated to be played by Hayley Mills. But when Mills had to bow out for personal reasons, Hampshire was called to play the part she was almost born to essay, and the greatest treat in this terrific Victorian soap opera is watching her lovely and loopy "Lady Glen," the wealthiest titled woman in England who is yet so childlike and ... VHS : The Pallisers, Set 2
The second set of DVDs in the BBC 26-part series "The Pallisers" from the mid 1970s is every bit as good as the first, and features at its core superb performances by Barbara Murray as the sharp and cagey Madame Max Goesler, Philip Latham as the stodgy but goodhearted Plantagent Palliser, and the charming Susan Hampshire as his impish wife, Lady Glencora. These DVDs cover the actions of Trollope's key novels in the Palliser sequence, PHINEAS FINN and THE EUSTACE DIAMONDS, which detail the doings among the highest political and moneyed set in the United Kingdom of the 1860s. They bring in several new characters, including the tiny, scheming, melodramatic Lizzie Eustace (Sarah Badel), the bumptious Adelaide Palliser (Jo Kendall), and the lazy and entitled dandy Gerald Maule (Jeremy Clyde, late of ... The acting is absolutely superb. I was a bit disappointed at the very end. I had hoped that the future duke would have followed tradition and focus on his duty not his heart.

VHS : Mallens (5pc)
The Mallens is a 1979 Catherine Cookson dramatisation that takes place in 19th-century Northumberland and centres around the Mallen clan. At the helm is the licentious, morally vacuous squire, Thomas Mallen, whose raping of a country girl (some twenty years before the story actually begins) has resulted in a bastard son--the parentage of whom is obvious as all males born to a Mallen have a characteristic white streak in their hair. The story covers three generations (unlike the trilogy of novels, which introduces an entire new fourth generation), revolving around the lives of and relationships between the lusty, self-serving patriarch; his son, Richard; his bastard son, Donald Radlet, and the Radlet family; his two neices, Barbara and Constance, and their governess, Miss Brigmore; the Bensham family from Manchester; ... VHS : The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club
I have the entire collection of the Carmichael Wimseys, and although I agree with the reviewer who said the actor doesn't meet my image of the character, I also have to say that he does grow on one with each succeeding play--and, because of it's vintage (970's), the series is in fact more like filmed theater, which makes it all the more enjoyable. By the time I got to Lord Peter Wimsey - Murder Must Advertise I enjoyed the Carmichael take on the character. I'm not sure quite who could play this role true to the author's version. The Edward Petherbridge Wimsey Dorothy L. Sayers Mysteries (The Lord Peter Wimsey-Harriet Vane Collection - Strong Poison / Have His Carcass / Gaudy Night)was also difficult to engage with, but his version was also very good. Perhaps the character is so much a creature of mind that there is ... Read More
