VHS : Chalk Garden
16-year old Laurel (Hayley Mills) likes to set fires, scream, tell lies, and generally boss around her doddering grandmother and tolerant butler (John Mills). When Miss Madrigal (Deborah Kerr) is hired as the new governess, Laurel begins her usual spying and tormenting in an effort to drive her away, but ends up discovering a terrible secret.

This movie marked Hayley Mills' effort to break away from little girl roles and expand her emotional range. Unfortunately, she isn't quite up to the material and instead does a lot of energetic shouting with no real pain or conviction behind it. Her lack of acting maturity is especially noticeable because the rest of the cast is so outstanding: Edith Evans is impressive as Laurel's stubborn grandmother and Deborah Kerr is flawless as the ... This is an odd choice to get the full Criterion treatment as it's a fairly tame cold war romantic comedy thriller with a very low-key romance and few real thrills or laughs. Charade this ain't. Good location shooting, and it's interesting to think there was a time when a mainstream entertainment would cater to a mature audience. But, be prepared for a very mellow affair.

Not sure why this merits an "R" rating as all Ned Beatty's profanities have been very obviously overdubbed.

I have to strongly disagree with nom... .This is a
delightful movie that will reel you in and then throw
you many curves. It starts off being a straight forward
heist. You are shown how it will work out.NOT !!! This
is when the fun begins.Caine and Maclaine are great together.
Suffice it to say,if you like heist movies with plot twists
then this is the movie for you.
Please bring it out on DVD.

VHS : Tunes of Glory
"Tunes of Glory" tells the story of what happens when the proverbial irresistible force meets the immovable object. Alec Guinness in the persona of Major Jock Sinclair represents the former, and John Mills represents the latter in role of Lt. Colonel Basil Barrow, who is sent to replace Sinclair as permanent Colonel of a Scottish battalion. Sinclair is a popular former (bag-) Pipe Major who has risen up through the ranks because of his heroism in the desert campaign of El Alamein in World War II. Barrow, whom Jock belittles, calling him "Barrow Boy" [street vendor], is the antithesis: a graduate of Eton and Oxford, he is descended from a long line of colonels who have themselves commanded the battalion. Barrow has therefore inherited the "Idea" of the regiment, while Sinclair has grown up at its heart and has grafted himself onto ... Read More

This is such a great movie, and if I had never seen it, I would not have known of this ingenious ploy created to out-fox the Germans in WWII. It involves planting false information on a body that is then allowed to wash up upon a critical shore. The Germans recover the body, analyze the false information and papers on the body, consider them geunine, and make battle plans accordingly, thinking they have a real "find." Instead they fall into a well-planned trap. Clifton Webb is excellent in his part, as is the "body."

I first bought this movie in a VHS version. I then upgrated to a DVD edition.

The story line takes place in the early 1960's and deals with how members of the Nazi SS slipped through the Allies hands and attempts to bring them to justice after WWII. It is the story of one man's search for answers and what that search led him to.

As always, the screen writers have dievated from the novel in places, but I like the movie none the less. I view it at least once every 12 to 18 months. If you like a good drama, you'll enjoy this movie.
