VHS : Fat Man & Little Boy
"Fat Man and Little Boy" takes a human look at the history behind the making of the atomic bomb. It has a superb ensemble cast- with the late Paul Newman as Gen. Leslie Groves, Dwight Schultz as Robert Oppenheimer, Jon Cusak as a scientist, and Natasha Richardson as Oppenheimer's Russian mistress. The movie avoids passing judgment on the Manhattan Project. Was it necessary for winning WWII, or was it human meddling with powers beyond their reach? What is the relationship between science and morality, especially in wartime?

"Fat Man and Little Boy" powerfully shows the isolation of the Manhattan Project in the midst of the New Mexico desert. Los Alamos and the Trinity site are, to this day, "desert solitaire" to quote the late naturalist Edward Abbey. There is the land and the sky-- and ... Read More

VHS : The Mission
A film that comes from so far away 22 years ago that the story, or the history, of the film is no longer important, but was it important even in 1986? Today the struggle between the two Christian kings of Portugal and of Spain on one hand, though hostile to each other when the other party is absent, and the church on the other hand, a church that is also divided between the European hierarchy that only sees the survival they have to go through in Europe by defending there their interests by sacrificing a few missions in South America. Today these details are irrelevant The Christian church or churches have long abandoned this kind of policy, particularly the Catholic church. Half an hour into the movie, I honestly was bored to tears and nearly cringed at this entire film. The only thing that's good about this film is the visuals, but flashy visuals don't mean anything if there's not a story. After just 20 minutes I got tired of watching the actors do nothing more but turn up their noses in snobbery and trying to acquire a French accent, which is not the least bit natural or believable. And Uma Thurman is absolutely boring and lackluster. In general, Vatel was boring. Even if there was an actual story, i wouldn't even care to know.

VHS : Super Mario Bros
I saw this when I was a kid, and though I wasn't exactly a huge fan of it, I did collect quite a few of the trading cards. Saw it again just recently. Though it augments a couple of the ideas from the Super Mario series (Thwomp Stompers, Goombas, etc), Super Mario Bros is nothing like those early Nintendo games. Rather than being a colourful, cute and varied fantasy, the world of the "Mushroom Kingdom" is trashy and dirty, full of crime, cars, cages and sci-fi explanations. Still, I found it entertaining enough, I loved Bob Hoskins as Mario, particularly his scenes in New York as a plumber and his banter with Luigi. Plus, the film captures a style and an era that is thoroughly interesting.

Mario and his kid brother Luigi are plumbers, and after finishing a job run into Daisy, a student archaeologist who ... Read More
