Raving About Roger Corman's The Raven (1963)

Every October my daughter and I pick up a few spooky movies to get into the Halloween groove. This year, I had the pleasure of introducing her to one of my all time favourite horror comedy classics, Director Roger Corman's "The Raven." The screenplay is adapted (VERY loosely) from the famous Edgar Allan Poe poem. This is one of Corman's many American International Picture adaptations of Edgar Allan Poe's works, and one of his best.

As the king of "b" horror movies, Corman knew had to make the most out of a tight budget. His stylish films consistently used good source material, well written screenplays, lavish set designs, locations, props, costumes and great horror stars. "The Raven" boasts no less a cast than ... Read More

VHS : Haunted Palace (1963)
An American couple travel abroad to haunted olde England to claim an inheritance, which is a strikingly beautiful castle high up on a hill overlooking a gloomy peasant village.

When entering the town pub for some directions, the resident drunken peasants are rude, fearful, & stuporstitious, when finally, a doctor explains the peasants' actions, & guides them to their inheritance.

The castle carries a nefarious connotation, a veritable "place that god forsook", where a Warlock bearing a frightening resemblence to the visiting American once resided, & who in fact, is the ancestor, whose dark magic left freakish anomeles upon the descendants of those who murdered him by the stake's flame. And indeed, his "generational curse" is plainly evident upon the deformed peasants ... Read More

VHS : Man With the X-Ray Eyes
Some wealthy celebrities become addicted to plastic surgery. They continue having operations until they no longer look like themselves. Sometimes, in extreme cases, they no longer appear human. They are greedy individuals who can't stop. For them, enough is never enough.

Dr. Xavier is a greedy physician who has discovered a formula for improving his vision. Is he satisfied with having 20/20 vision? Of course not. He wants to see the entire spectrum of light, visible and non-visible. He keeps pouring the formula into his eyes until he can see through clothes and then through concrete. He can't stop taking the formula. Naturally, there are disastrous consequences.

"X - The Man with the X-Ray Eyes" is a great science fiction film starring horror veteran Ray Milland ("The ... Read More

This film is worth viewing for two reasons - Steve Cochran and Robert Strauss. They are both as good as it gets. But you would have to be as big a fan of Steve Cochran as I to make this product worth even its extremely low price.
The film is choppy with lines and distortions in some places. The story doesn't hold together very well, and, as pointed out by another reviewer, the obviously Italian Lita Milan plays a character named "Teresa Porter," and Austrian born and accented Celia Lovsky plays Cochran's long suffering Italian mother. The DVD is so cheap that they couldn't even get the character's name right on the back cover. Cochran plays Joe Sante, but, on the DVD case, his character is referred to as "Steve Fisher," who was actually the writer of the film. And there are no features whatsoever - the only two ... Not a movie it's possible to criticize. We're all dying, but that's life: diseased, mad, servile and heading straight for the coffin and the crypt. Vincent was a filmic presence beyond price. That voice, that face, that manner: he wasn't acting, he just was. Poe was a true original, and one is left wondering what hell he dredged these visions up from. Corman knew what he was about, even if he didn't follow the story. Suspend everything when watching this. Don't be impatient. Read the other reviews if you need help. Now I know where Francis Bacon got his hideous picture painting portrait style from: Vincent Priceless!

Peter Lorre's ,"The Black Cat",is charmingly done.Yet,the other two are stinkers.I'm a Corman fan,but this was boring and silly to watch.I think they had a good idea ,bringing the trilogy it to the big screen. But,this version and interpretation of Poe's masterpieces didn't translate well at all.So ,beware of the dog!
