Most of Nelson and Jeanette films will make you sing and smile and once
in a while make you shed a tear. I always wanted to know why my mom
cried looking at their movies years ago when i sat on her lap while they
played on tv in the early sixties. Now that im older, and have just seen
this movie, i also shed a tear for this delightfull tale of love.

It was suppose to be in color, but with ongoing problems ...like always..
MGM shot it in black and white. Im so used to see Nelson and Jeanette in
black in white that i does not bother me anymore... The Love stories are
always a pleasure to watch and the signing usually melts me down.
There was some ongoing friction between the two stars when the movie was
filmed but it does'nt show. Lots of people can sing, but none can beat
the duo of Nelson Eddy and Jeanette Macdonald.....Music Gold.

VHS : Pride and Prejudice
Having read the book (one of my favorites), I just can't stomach this film. What really turned me off was the depiction of Lady Catherine. In the book, that character is never reconciled to the marriage of Darcy and Elizabeth. And where did they get the idea for the archery scene? Certainly not from the book. If you haven't read the book, you might find it entertaining; but for anyone who loves the book, this film just doesn't do it justice.

I have the BBC version and the A&E version. I have not seen the version made this century. Of the two that I have, I would say that the A&E version is the most complete. The BBC version is very good but when the story gets to it's climax, it is rushed to completion as if the writer or editor were trying to wrap-up the story quickly due to time constraints. It's disappointing ... Read More

VHS : Divorcee (1930)
"The Divorcee" is a movie that risks a lot and rewards us with much more. The movie tackles some big issues in a most frank way, at least for 1930. Had the movie been made a few years later, we would have seen a vastly different picture.

Most people have only heard of this movie, few have seen it. Film buffs have only know the movie as "that one Norma Shearer won the Oscar for". But it is a little more than that.

The movie looks at double-standards in society. Jerry (Shearer) and Ted (Chester Morris) are young and in love. They surprise everyone at a pasrty when they announce they are going to be married. This news especially upsets Paul (Conrad Nagel) whom had planned to marry Jerry himself.

Three years later, while celebrating their anniversary Jerry discovers that Ted had an affair, he assures ... Read More

VHS : Great Ziegfeld
THE GREAT ZIEGFELD was another big one for MGM, a biopic extravaganza in which the life of Florenz Ziegfeld was used as a sounding board for a variety of ever more spectacular musical numbers. Along the way, there are brief respites for some guest stars (Ray Bolger and Fanny Brice - her line, "For Ziegfeld, I gotta be an urchin... even in burlesque, I was middle-class", is priceless), and mind-numbing musical numbers (how were those supposed to be done live on stage?), tied to a story of Ziegfeld's life and loves. This was not only a box office smash, it was also a big award magnet, winning the Academy Award as Best Picture as well as the award for Best Actress for Luise Rainer's portrayal of Anna Held. Now: this is an example of the height of frivolity, because Anna Held was a great sex symbol in her day (the turn-of-the-century equivalent of Brigitte ... Read More

I was not expecting much when I sat down to watch this movie for the first time. It had received pretty mediocre reviews on this site, but I bought it regardless, simply because of the good price and because I am infatuated with Clark Gable. After watching this movie, I did not understand why people were so unimpressed with it. It is one of the prized movies in my collection.

This film is short and sweet, and gets directly to the point. Basically the plot revolves around Greta and Gable's seemingly hopeless romance, which is pretty standard, but for some reason this movie is not standard. It is great.

Clark is impeccable in this early role. He really held his own and Greta did a good job as well, though it is not amongst her best roles, certainly.

The direction is very interesting and well done. Greta was filmed in a loving, ... Read More

I am not a big movie buff, but purchased this film because I am a fan of silent film star Henry B. Walthall. Walthall is only in the film for the first seven minutes and then his character dies. Rather than losing interest in the film, however, I kept watching and found it very enjoyable. It is a very innovative film, based on the Eugene O'Neill play, that includes thoughts of the characters that are audible to the audience. The main character is Nina Leeds (Norma Shearer). Nina is a very obsessive, neurotic woman who controls the hearts of three men while pining away for her dead fiance Gordon, killed in the Great War. Nina continues to control the lives of her three suitors (one of which is played by Ralph Morgan, brother of the Wizard of Oz). She enters a marriage with a man she does not love and, due to a secret curse in his bloodline, cannot bare his child. She decides, ... Read More

The two-dimensional uninteresting characters put me to sleep after I gave it a try. I skimmed through it, and promptly erased it - it was on Turner Classic Movies. Glad I didn't buy it. I do like movies from the 40s, otherwise.
