VHS : The X-Files: Humbug/Anasazi
Until recently, I had never seen an episode of "The X-Files" and when I watched a tape with two episodes, I had only a vague idea of what was going on. The storyline was heavily dependent on the context established by previous episodes, so it was difficult to understand.
Happily, that was not the case for the "Humbug" episode. It was very easy to understand and is an example of something that would at first appear impossible. It is an intense murder mystery involving a bizarre serial killer, yet it is also humorous. It closes with one of the best lines of dialog ever uttered, even though it is a cliche.
Mulder and Scully are on the trail of a serial killer that gouges out a large section of the victim's abdomen. Their travels take them to a trailer park inhabited by ex-sideshow ... Read More

Having seen just about every Titanic movie out there, I would have to say that it is a pretty decent film. At least we didn't have to put up with implausible romances, such as Jack and Rose. The romantic story lines are kept within the classes in which they occurred, rather than some ridiculous First-Class/steerage romance.

Oddly, the sinking sequence in this version has more emotional impact than James Cameron's version did. Given the low budget, it was well done. There is a sort of starkness that makes an even deeper emotional impact than Cameron's movie.

My main "beef" is the portrayal of First Officer William Murdoch. In this version, he is made to look like a serious contender for "Developmentally-Developed Merchant Officer of 1912! In the scene where Smith tells ... Read More

VHS : The X-Files: Ascension/One Breath
Until I watched this tape, I had never seen even a minute of an X-Files episode. All I knew was that it was about two FBI agents named Scully and Mulder and they investigated strange events. While watching this tape, I was entertained yet puzzled. The two episodes rely heavily on events in previous episodes and the involvement of the enigmatic "Cigarette Smoking Man" and the "Death Dealing Black Guardian Angel" had me puzzled.
In the first episode "Ascension", a supposedly insane man who believes that he is about to be abducted by aliens kidnaps Scully. He takes her to the top of a ski resort and Mulder follows them there in the company of a fellow agent. That agent is playing a double game, trying to prevent Mulder from getting to the top of the mountain and saving Scully. When Mulder gets there, ... Read More

VHS : The X-Files: Pusher/Jose Chung's "From Outer Space"
First off, I'll mention the "other" episode on this tape, "Pusher", by saying that it's an above-average episode. It's the story of a man with a terminal brain tumor, and the tumor has given him the ability to force his will onto other people. He's using this power to get other people to injure or kill themselves, and Mulder and Scully are sent to stop him. The climax is a doozy, as the man forces Mulder to play a deadly game of Russian roullette. But the OTHER episode - "Jose Chung's From Outer Space" is my all-time favorite episode of the X-Files (and, as I've learned, it's often the favorite episode of other X-Files fans as well). The plot is rather complicated, but I'll try to simplify it: Charles Nelson Reilly (who some may remember was a regular on the classic "Match Game" game show in the seventies) is wonderful ...
