VHS : Nobody's Fool (1994)
This is a gentle, small movie about small-town living and its citizens, particularly a blatantly unapologetic ne'er-do-well named Sully (Paul Newman) who has lived his life exactly as he wants to and manages, by optimism and the bonding in this town, to survive quite well in spite of himself.

Sully has co-existed with his former eighth-grade teacher for apparent decades (the great Jessica Tandy, in her next-to-last performance), living in an upstairs apartment and doing - when he remembers to - odd jobs for her as well as keeping an eye on her. He is constantly at odds with her stuffy bank-manager son (Josef Sommer) who wants Sully out of his mother's house; Sully is also at mild odds with several other people in town, including his ex-wife, and an uncredited performance by Bruce ... VHS : Billy Bathgate
BILLY BATHGATE (1991) revisits the events of a Post-Prohibition America, from a
nostalgia, romantic, glossy intentional perspective, taking the actual events that
happened, reversing them 180 degrees, especially the overwhelming brutality, violence, ruthless
gangwars, and street rubouts, preferring mostly a fantasy of a boy who is a morale booster
and apprentice of an aging, lead gangster, played magnificently by Dustin Hoffman. The audience
relives the experience of that impoverished working class boy of Irish descent, who evolves into
a grown man, from both his career experience in that underground organization and his
intimate relationship with the character played by Nicole Kidman.

This movie has the feel of a museum of sorts, such is ... Read More

VHS : Kramer vs. Kramer
I saw Kramer vs Kramer in DVD a few days ago and thougth that it didn't age very well. The first part is a flawless drama about how the perfect yuppie life changed to Ted Kramer (Dustin Hoffman), after his wife decided to leave him with their small son Billy (Justin Henry) so she can find herself.
Hoffman is wonderful: charming, vulnerable; the kid is cute an cries like a pro, and Meryl Streep is perfect as the unhappy young mother. New York City is beautiful and it's easy to emphasize with the dilemmas of mother, father and child; but when it comes to the part when it becames a courtroom drama, the argument of each lawyer are weak: Joanna won't be a fit mother because she has a demanding job, and Ted won't be a fit father because he sacrificed his lucrative job to care for his child.

VHS : Still of the Night
This is a good thriller with lots of creepy touches. Roy Scheider is a recently divorced Manhattan psychiatrist. One of his patients is murdered and both the police and the victim's beautiful girlfriend (Meryl Streep) who seems to be the top suspect contact him. There is an immediate romantic attraction between Scheider and Streep and Scheider attempts to solve the murder using information the deceased man revealed to him during his twice weekly appointments. The most important info is a disturbing dream which is reenacted on screen in a memorable and truly chilling manner.

The deceased and Streep's character worked together at "Christen's" auction house specializing in antiquities and much of the film is set in this affluent world of high end art. Manhattan at night is used to good effect throughout the film ... Read More

VHS : Twilight (1998)
The plot is a standard one. Our private detective, Harry Ross, makes a simple delivery for a friend and discovers a murder. Then he discovers several more. The police suspect him, but let him go. He wades through the confusion, taking the occasional beating. Finally, he solves the mystery. Then re-solves it. We've seen the plot before. But this movie isn't great because of the plot. It's the characters.

Excepting a very young Reese Witherspoon, who bounces through an early scene, the main characters are all...old. Paul Newman, Gene Hackman, and James Garner are seasoned actors who know their craft and themselves through decades of experience. They use this knowledge to bring a world-weary, knowing depth to their characters. Not-so-old Susan Sarandon and Stockard Channing also invest their characters with this ... Read More

Very thought provoking.

It is about a man leaving his family (and color) to start a new life. For some reason he only falls for white women. Supposedly, he is so light that no one else can tell he is black. He only sneaks around to see his family. It is a strange movie but still thought provoking and deep.

VHS : Bad Company (1972)
For me the impact of "Bad Company" was onset of the mystery of the actor playing Drew Dixon. I was surprised to see this talented, handsome kid holding his own (if not upstaging) Jeff Bridges. I saw it first on cable and had to wait until the end credits to discover the name Barry Brown. That sent me on the quest for an explanation of why this kid did not go on to continued stardom.
That led to the discovery that the beautiful and talented Barry shot himself in 1978. And further that his 2 years younger sister jumped off a Los Angeles overpass in 1995, having never recovered from Barry's unceremonious exit or the family dysfunctions that they shared. Younger brother Jim's book ("Los Angeles Diaries") blames parents and alchoholism (but who doesn't?)
My fascination with a guy who had everything (looks, 170 IQ, shining talent) but checked out anyway ... Read More
