VHS : The Mr. Bill Collection (The Best of Saturday Night Live)
All the material on this disk plus more is contained in the three-disk Definitive Collection which at the time of this writing is in print, available on Amazon, and very inexpensive (especially through 3rd-party sellers). What the D.C. lacks is any printed material that might be included with this Anchor Bay release.
Mr. Bill, BTW, seemed a lot funnier to me during his SNL run (this seems to be the general consensus), but even with hindsight, I'd probably still purchase the D.C., if only for an inexpensive trip down Memory Lane. Rating reflects the material, which I have seen, and not this particular release, which I haven't.

This is the same edition that came out in 2004; it does not contain any new features. I looked on Criterion's website, and apparently the only thing "new" about this edition is the lower retail price. Still a great movie, so if you don't own it yet, now you can get it for less money. Very cool feature-length making-of documentary included.

This was a hoot but I wish they showed more of the Linda Tripp skits with John Goodman, those were some of the best!

For its time, this was an entertaining comedy with an anti-war message that was loved for its ability to express the feelings of most Americans at the time on the Vietnam War. This is a film about the Korean War only in name but as you will see throughout, the de facto Vietnam theme is prevalent throughout sometimes subtly but even blatantly for instance in the downtown "Korea" scene where the women are all wearing Vietnamese-style conical hats which is not indigenous to Korea.

Overall, this comedy doesn't age well for modern viewers although its anti-war message is very clear and resonates even today. Some parts are simply boring and I especially found the whole football scene totally sleep-worthy and I didn't see how it added to the overall theme unless it's a way to show how Americans try to impose their culture ... WORST 133 MINUTES I'VE SPENT LATELY. IT HAD SUBTITLES, THAT DIDN'T STAY UP LONG ENOUGH, AND JUST A STUPIT MOVIE OVERALL. COMPANY DELIVERED DVD IN RECORD TIME. THAT'S THE ONLY GOOD THING I HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THIS PRODUCT.

I watched this as a kid and now have children of my own. We watched it again last night. I must say that this film is brilliant. In the hype of contemporary special effects, over acted and over sung musicals, this film somehow captures the flavor of the cartoons, yet builds its own characters. I was hooked as a kid, and now my own kids are asking to watch it again. It is clean, morals are taught, well acted, music is on spot for the purpose. Very much a classic - Williams and Duvall are excellent. I have been watching movies for all my life - I very much enjoy them, but I have not been so pleased after a movie in years.

VHS : Long Goodbye
There's no doubt that Raymond Chandler is a wonderful writer. But this film version of The Long Goodbye does not do the book any justice. It throws out the 1930's historical context and sets the book in the 1960's. This does not work. Elliot Gould is totally miscast as Philip Marlowe, Chandler's famous private eye. Gould lacks the toughness and wit of Chandler's Marlowe as well as the mannerisms and philosophy. Not surprising, The Long Goodbye is a complete flop. Don't waste your time and money on this film even if you love Chandler, Marlowe and film noir. Thomas Lee.
