VHS : Student Prince (1954)
I was dragged to this movie as a young boy. What young man wants to see a movie with a singing prince and a love story? It didn't take long for me to enjoy the story of male bonding by singing and drinking in the beer garden soon to be followed by a sword fight.
I can almost imagine myself serenading the beautiful and sexy barmaid (Ann Bylthe), especially with the flawless voice from GOD(Mario Lanza) lip-synced to near perfection by the prince(Edmund Purdom).
All this plus an arrogant jerk is shown the error of his ways. Oh yeah, and the love story is classic.
With 20-20 hindsight it's obvious that losing Lanza, the actor, was a stroke of luck.

VHS : Great Caruso
This is a highly fictionaliased and heavily sentimental portrait of the great operatic tenor .It is lavishly mounted and has many popular ingredients which all helped in making it a major commercial hit in its day.

There is the rags to riches nature of the story as Enrico Caruso rises from poverty on the back streets of Naples to becoming the darling of New York society ,overcoming the death of his mother while still a child and building a carrer in the opera houses of Europe before his US debut. There is the theme of his falling in love with a scion of New York society ,in the face of unbending parental disapproval .There are lots of popular operatic arias and a strong dose of religiosity ,with the Bach -Gounoud "Ave Marie" a particular standout ..for those with more populist taste there ... VHS : The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a classic story that has made its way in some way or another into the brains of every American. It is Mark Twain's novel about a boy named Huck (Mickey Rooney) who hates school and everything proper who escapes his aunts and his deadbeat father on a raft down the river. He discovers that his aunt Polly's slave Jim (Rex Ingram) has escaped too, and the two join forces. However, it is assumed that Jim has killed Huck, so a desperate search is on to find the runaway.

Thanks to two outstanding performances by a youthful Rooney and a talented Ingram (not the director), this film shines. Rooney was certainly no innocent little boy when he made this film, but he behaves just like one. Ingram was lucky enough to get one of the few black roles at this time with some depth; ... I purchased this movie for the singing of Lauritz Melchior.Which as always was wonderful. almost as great as Two Sisters from Boston.
The movie itself was very entertaining, good singing and not a bad plot. and of course Durante is a warm person and very funny.

We showed this movie at the theatre I worked at when it first came out. Except for the Martian-fearing sailor, overall I thought it was funny (I just don't care for silly comedy - hence only 4 stars). I am a particular fan of the Hutton/Prentiss comedy pair-up.
