VHS : The Christmas Wonder Years - The Holiday Episodes
Wow! This tape would make an excellent gift for all Wonder Years fans! In the first episode, sweet 12-year-old Kevin Arnold is trying to find a present for his girlfriend Winnie and at the same time, the whole Arnold household is hoping Jack, the father will buy them a color t.v. for Christmas. In the end, Kevin learns that Christmas is more than presents and is about the memories and special moments in life. In the second episode, Kevin is older (sixteen-years-old) and is trying to find the perfect present for Winnie again. After the family, suffers a financial blow because Jack's partner decides to not invest in the furniture company, the holiday spirit is again being tested. I enjoyed the tapes so much and I watch them over and over. Definately a good tape.

VHS : Best of the Wonder Years
Of course all of the Wonder Years is the best of the Wonder Years (except for the bits without much Fred Savage in them - for shame!). However, this DVD certainly hits the spot. Five million thumbs up!

VHS : Star Trek - The Next Generation, Episode 125: The Inner Light
This episode is certainly worth owning. To me, it embodies everything that was great about Patrick Stewart's classically influenced TNG acting chops, and the quality and sensibilities that made/make Star Trek so great. In fact, it is this sort of writing that makes science fiction thick and rich with potential. It's about imagination, but imagination within the realm of possibility. How many other worlds are out there now? How many have come and gone before us? This episode explores those very ideas and does it with class, style and panache. I can't explain this episode. Well, I could, but I can't do it justice, just watch. Watch with an open mind and an open heart, and I guarantee you'll come away a bit more sensitive towards the universe around you. You may also notice a haunting tug each time you look at a ... Read More

VHS : Tales From The Darkside Vol. 3
This is another great show from the 1980's. More creepy than scary, and usually having a moral to the story at the end. I enjoyed this one back then--also "Amazing Stories" and "Tales From the Crypt" (which is a lot more graphic and scary). "Tales From the Darkside" was simpler, usually with few FX and a simple set, however, the stories themselves were interesting and original.

VHS : The X-Files: Humbug/Anasazi
Until recently, I had never seen an episode of "The X-Files" and when I watched a tape with two episodes, I had only a vague idea of what was going on. The storyline was heavily dependent on the context established by previous episodes, so it was difficult to understand.
Happily, that was not the case for the "Humbug" episode. It was very easy to understand and is an example of something that would at first appear impossible. It is an intense murder mystery involving a bizarre serial killer, yet it is also humorous. It closes with one of the best lines of dialog ever uttered, even though it is a cliche.
Mulder and Scully are on the trail of a serial killer that gouges out a large section of the victim's abdomen. Their travels take them to a trailer park inhabited by ex-sideshow acts. The people have deformities such as ... Read More

'Look out Wall Street I'm Coming Home!'

Real life ball player Robyn Barto is shortstop Paula, who wants to play with the big boys on a major league team. She visits Ft. Lauderdale during Spring Training and tries to convince snooty Devil's owner Sandy (Harry Hamlin from "Clash of the Titans"), and crotchety coach Lou (Dana Eclar from TV's "MacGuyver") to let her on the team. Sounds like a promising, albeit formulaic, sports picture, but throw in a a clumsy romantic subplot involving Paula's manager Liz (Mimi Rogers, "Someone to Watch Over Me") and Sandy that takes up most of the film's second half, and you get a film with an identity crisis, which seems to ruin the point of this whole endeavor.

If you decide to bother, keep an eye out for Andy Garcia in his first(?) film role as Devils' team member Ken. Early ... Read More

VHS : Sadat
Made less than two years after Sadat's assassination, the movie makes him out to be a saint. Sadat was no saint, he was a man and he had his faults like any other.

The movie compresses many events in Sadat's life. It appears that both prison sentences he served early in his life are portrayed as a single event. Also, his role in the pro-Nazi Free Officers is not discussed at all, nor would you know that Sadat was jailed while Britain and the Allies were fighting for their lives when Sadat started trying to undermine them.

Given the circumspect nature of the film many key events, formation of the United Arab Republic, Egyptian involvement in Yemen, the War of Attrition etc. are not discussed. However, the film does attempt to convey the byzantine nature of military politics which ran the country during and after the ... Read More
