VHS : The Beatles - Help!
I don't know why it took me so long to watch/purchase this movie. I am a Beatles freak and own every album and had seen Hard Day's Night, but until this reissue of Help! I just hadn't taken the time to check it out. But I have to say that I liked this movie MORE than Hard Day's Night. The gorgeous color and fun storyline were highly entertaining! This is my kind of movie. Quick little one liners, and funny little bits that if you blink you might miss them. Which also makes this film ideal for repeat viewing. The visuals are just outstanding, vibrant colors and great scenery! I highly recommend this film to even the most casual Beatle fan (if there is such a thing!!)

VHS : Three Musketeers (1974)
This remake of the old black and white film adaptation of Alexandre Dumas's « The Three Musketeers » misses the main point of the book, maybe even two main points. It misses the gallant courtly politeness that is nothing but hypocrisy in the mouth of Cardinal Richelieu who appears as a bad loser when he is an elegant plotter who never loses because his short term defeat is a victory in the long run, a victory of the main political objective of his that the film misses completely. In this 17th century, with King Louis XIII, the father of the Sun King Louis XIV, the French state is starting to centralize and to conquer real state power, hence to move out of feudal allegiances that are too vague, loose and easy to betray to build a modern state on. And what is essential in this situation, the ... Read More

VHS : The Return of the Musketeers
It was good to see the 'boys' in action again. The 'twist' of Athos and Arimis not trusting d'Artagnan was good. Otherwise, most of it was boring. I loved the 3 and 4 Musketeers, the 3 being my favorite.

VHS : Four Musketeers (1975)
This is probably the 2 best versions of the movie versions of the 3 Musketeers. Michael York, Richard Chamberlain, Frank Finlay and Oliver Reed are amazing as the Musketeers. The story centers on young D'artagnon played by York who travels to Paris to become a Musketeer but ends up in one misadventure after another. Charlton Heston plays Cardinal Richelieu, the most powerful man in France that is trying to replace the King as absolute ruler by scheming and plotting against him and the Queen. Christopher Lee stars as Rochforte and Faye Dunaway as Milady Dewinter play the Cardinal's henchmen and assassins to humorous delight. The 3 Musketeers centers on the Queen's secret love affair with the Duke of Ellinton with the Musketeers trying to foil the Cardinal's plans to ruin the Queen's reputation. The 4 Musketeers ... VHS : Finders Keepers

This is a terrific screwball comedy that barrels along like a non-stop runaway train - which happens to be the setting throughout much of the movie. Michael O'Keefe inadvertently gets involved in a robbery when he himself is trying to escape from the feminine clutches of a roller derby team he owns; the money from the robbery is hidden in a coffin that's being transported across country by train. One complication leads to another, too many to describe here. But what makes the movie so much better than many of its type is that all the crazy parts (and there are many) fit perfectly together. There's some poking fun at Hollywood, Richard Nixon, small-town politics, etc., but it's not at all heavy-handed. It's a well done, well thought out and executed light comedy. Perhaps the best character in the movie is David Wayne as the oldest train ... Read More

VHS : Juggernaut (1974)
Richard Lester's 1974 thriller JUGGERNAUT has often lumped together with the "disaster films" of the era. I trust it's not too much of a spoiler to say that it would be more accurately termed a "disaster narrowly avoided" film. Come to think of it, what's WRONG with calling it a plain old "thriller." "Disaster film" has always implied hundreds, even thousands dead or maimed. In a movie like THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE--so emblematic of the genre--a mere handful of survivors live to tell the tale. The body count in JUGGERNAUT is substantially less. The tension, however, is actually higher.

For viewers in the new millennium, a film JUGGERNAUT may even hit harder than a "forces of nature" or "failure of technology" type disaster flick from almost 40 years ago. The film revolves around an act of terrorism, and even if this particular perp's ... Read More
